HD SHOWS - INSIDER, ET, ELLEN

so we all know the insider, entertainment tonight and ellen all went HD this year. (and so did oprah)

so why don't affiliates show them in HD? here in chicago, everything is still shown in SD.....
(i don't know about oprah, i know she's now in HD but i haven't watched yet)

what about where you all are, are all these shows being shown in HD there??

i know it's something technical so if someone could explain it to me, i'd appreciate it.

In Orlando

Dr. Phil (on WKMG) - unsure (probably SD, knowing WKMG)
Ellen (on WESH) - SD
ET (on WESH) - HD
Insider (on WRDQ) - HD
Oprah (on WFTV) - HD

As expected Dr. Phil on WKMG is SD.

I know that Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy are in HD.

Why aren’t the shows being broadcast in HD in your area? Here are several reasons:

1: You might have your TV set to the analogue channel instead of the digital channel. Double check your TV and/or cable box. Also, you want to make sure you have an HDTV.
2: The station that is broadcasting the program does not have the capabilities to broadcast syndicated programming in HD. For instances, I worked in the Master Control of an NBC station several years ago (since than I have moved to a network) we aired Oprah, Dr. Phil, Ellen, Wheel and Jeopardy in SD on our HD channel because we did not have an HD tape deck to run those programs from, even though we broadcast NBC programming in HD. That could be the same problem with you local channels. They just don’t have the capability to broadcast the HD version of the program. Which I’m kind of surprised they don’t since it’s a major market.
Also, an FYI, 1 HD tape deck for broadcasting an HD tape can run up to $60,000...and the tape stock can run up to $127 PER TAPE! As you can see, it's an expensive move.

Doesn't CBS provide multiple live feeds of ET and the like, so that it might be possible to run it straight off the bird?

ET - WBBM - SD
The Insider - WCIU - SD

From my understanding, it could of changed since I left

Yes, and no.

Yes, you can take it live if you want too, but, they do refeeds for legal and technical reasons, so it would be best to do a "tape/server" delay.

For instance, most of the time, ET and Insider is shown at the 7PM hour, at 7PM, there is no feed off the bird.

WMAQ is owned by NBC and WBBM is owned by CBS, so I don't understand why they can't broadcast syndicated programming in HD, because both compaines have a nice budget to them.

WCIU I can understand, since they are owned by a small company and are independent.

Here in Fairbanks, all those shows will still air in SD.

But in Anchorage, Dr. Phil, Oprah and ET are on KTVA while KTUU has Ellen (they don't have The Insider anymore); both stations have HD channels but for the time being, they'll still be in standard-def.

Some reports have shown up in another discussion board (dedicated primarily to home theater and HD technology) of weekend syndication reruns of "Lost" and a couple of the "CSI" series showing up in high definition.
