HD Sidebands and Part 15 FM Transmission in NYC Area

Wasn't really sure how to title this subject, but I have a question that hopefully someone here will answer.

I was trying out my Belkin Tunecast today while driving and staying parked in eastern Morris County NJ, flipping through the various frequencies to try and find a clear channel to listen to my iPod. My initial thinking was I would have the best chance at clean audio at 94.3, thinking it was a second adjacent to two stations which primarily use talk, not booming music for their broadcast. After failing to find much success, I tried some other 2nd adjacents like 104.7. However, it seemed while I was parked at least that some of the first adjacent channels provided equal, if not better signals, especially on 89.3, 106.5, and 94.1.

My question is this - do HD signals somehow quiet their first adjacents enough with their "bleed" that it makes it more desirable to use than a second adjacent for these small part 15 FM transmitters?
