HD sound bracket

Which one has the better sound?

WIP-HD vs. WYSP HD3
WPHT-HD vs. WOGL HD3
KYW-HD vs. WYSP HD2
WPEN-950HD vs. Non-HD 97.5 FM

When you can get it, WPHT-HD sounds better than WOGL-HD3. The last time I paid close attention, the HD3 was mono while the AM HD was stereo. The HD-3 was lower in level overall and sounded a bit more compressed.

But I can't pull in the AM HD with any reliability these days due to a noisy environment.

Like FM analog if you don't listen too closely. In headphones you can hear the swirlies you get with a mid-rate bitstream.

Wideband analog AM on a radio equipped to receive it like the Superradio 3 sounds as good as FM through both the speaker and the headphones.

I don't know. I can't see the WPHT tower and the last time I was near its tower, there was a thunderstorm, so I couldn't hear it in HD.

But wouldn't WPHT & WIP turn off their HD mode during ballgames (as some stations do, such as WFAN-AM NYC for the Mets, Giants, Nets & Devils & WCBS-AM NYC for the Yankees)? I've read that this temporary return to analog is referred to as "Ballpark Mode" in that the built-in 8 second delay associated with HD disappears. This brings the radio call as close in time to the live action as possible, unless a particular station continues to run an additional "expletive delay" during game broadcasts, which is usually not done.

As with WXRK-HD3 NYC (which rebroadcasts WFAN-AM) & WCBS-(FM)HD3 (which rebroadcasts WCBS-AM), I'd imagine that the WOGL-HD3 rebroadcast of WPHT-AM and the WYSP-HD3 rebroadcast of WIP-AM run continuously (no matter what event is airing), usually on about a 1 minute delay after the AM radio broadcast.

Strictly speaking, you don't have to turn off the HD to go into "ballpark mode" where the event is live on the analog side. HD introduces a delay on the digital side. The delay on the analog side is put there on purpose to make digital-analog transitions sound better (i.e., synchronized), but it can be turned off if you're willing to have analog to digital transitions that aren't synchronized.

I think the teams should run LPFM stations inside stadiums and arenas with the live feed, and maybe even a second FM channel with the live feed from the TV broadcast.

Isn't the WPHT-HD feed on the speakers at Citizens Bank Park for the PBP?

The WPHT feed is (not sure if it's analog AM, HD, or some internal feed), but you can't hear the speakers from your seat. Which is as it should be, but I should be able to listen to it on headphones if I want to. I should also be able to listen to the guys from Comcast SportsNet if I want to.

I think WPHT does go into ballpark mode--I've noticed sometimes during the wrapup of the game that their audio will stop and then repeat itself for a few seconds, which must be how they get out of ballpark mode.

Or even the visiting team's broadcast.
