HD station. Any worth listening to?

Does anyone have a station that is on HD that is worth listening to in your market. Where I am at, there is a comedy channel but thats about it. It isn't too good. Let me know, I travel alot and would like to know. I may be in your market sometime and would like to check it out.

I've only heard snippets of them, but WFUV (90.7 FM) in the Bronx has an HD-2 program that is mostly AAA/folk type music and WNYC (93.9 FM) has an all classical stream on its HD-2.

I don't know if either of these are actually programmed by a living, breathing human being or just cyber-jukeboxes. :-\

Well one man's (or woman's) "worth listening to" is another's "fingernails on a chalkboard". It's subjective, which is why there are so many formats. Having said that, I enjoy several HD offerings around here. WFDD in Winston Salem NC has 24 hour classical music on their HD2...and yes there are live humans, but it's from a network. Their HD1, of course, is the same news/talk that is hugely popular on NPR stations.

WFAE in Charlotte has "Triple A" ("Exponential Radio") on their HD2, and 24 hour news on HD3. All certainly "worth listening to" to me. WTQR in Greensboro NC has country oldies on their HD2 (current country on HD1), which makes them the only outlet offering the guys and gals who made country music...Cash/Nelson/Parton/Haggard/Jones/Lynn/etc.

104.7FM in Charlotte has "The Shuffle Channel" on their HD2...which plays an enormous variety of pop and rock tunes...way more variety than any "main" channel, but it is automated.

There are others as well, but there are a few of the HD offerings I find "worth listening to" in my area.

Ditto... I'm particularly fond of an all 90s HD2. It's a retro CHR/alternative hybrid. Just went from Garbage Special to George Michael's Fastlove to Big Audio Dynamite II's The Globe.

I love it, but I'm sure it would be painful for some others to listen to.

My 3 area HD2 channels are all a big disappointment as far as crappy formats. Two are 50KW signals, so they work okay; however, the one HD2 I listened to for a little while would drop in and out in town, despite being a 19KW station!

Los Angeles area HD Stations I like.

KKGO HD 3 The Standards
KMVN HD 2 AAA
KRTH HD 2 K-Earth Classics. 1955-1966

These stations are all jukeboxes, but each plays a wide variety of music that has not been beaten to death. A lot like the automated FM stations of the 60's and 70's. Maybe if HD finds an audience DJ's can be added down the line. A friendly and music knowledgeable on-air voice would be great.

Well... ... ... I cant seem to find them...

But wait! ...Somebody else has...

Well... It’s well known that “Russ ISN’T” [a member of ANYTHING in corporate radio]– but hold on... He enthusiastically launched “HD Radio” [and second AND third] on HD-2 and HD-3 in the beginning at 101.9 WKLU—NOW—he’s running “infomercials” during afternoon drive... So much for the coveted “stations-between-the-stations”! THIS IS SAD—but predictable.

OK, now hold on. Many people here stand by and watch the "HIPPO"critical tyraids against radio programming. This "IS" what more choice is all about. Do I "WANT" this garbage on my radio? Definitively - NO. However, it "IS" part of more choice. I would say the internet gives a person a lot more choice in terms of entertainment. Yet every day I seem to find a way to get a 3 foot "Member" in my email. Is email bad? - N000...... Do I check email every day despite my alledgedly "puny Pexxx"? YEP.

On this programming issue, it's tune out or "Buy". Did I mention that SOMEONE is investing SOMETHING to run the "Colon Blow" show? That would be the block time buyer who paid to run this GEM, or the owner who thinks it's worth their airtime to run it on "PI". Are people here realy foolish enough to think that more choices is always going to equate to "Hi Brow" Quality programming?

The absolute complete and total lack of understanding of how broadcasting works by some members of these boards is astounding. (I'll direct that to the people on the "Indiana radio" board as opposed to those who might support this idiotic position here.)

Broadcasters run what works for them. Almost all but the Galacticly stupid licensees do this. If "Doing something else" equalled better money then they'd be all over it.

What you have in this case is an operator who has found out there is NOT a lot of "TR" to be made on HD. For those of you in the business, "TR" is "NTR" without the "N". If you don't know what I means, feel free to continue to rant about nonesense here. What happens when there isn't enough "TR"? Block programming or an LMA. Or we spend the IRA. Either way, it ain't good.

It's funny because HD is usually advocated by the "Haves". Yet Colon Blow is usually advocated by the "Have Nots."

You can draw your own conclusions here. Mine?

HD is sliding to the mainstream. Is Colon Blow on HD-2 good? My heart says NO. But my brain has another take...

Actually as an afterthought, I'm kinda surprised this post appeared. I thought no one was listening to HD-2's. :)

Wait let me save you clicking reply. We know they won't if they run this stuff...

Still................. :)

Seems I got under The Inspector’s skin just a bit—which proves I probably made a point—as rhetorical [and dependant on the posts of others from “The Indiana Board”] as it may have been.

As usual, The Inspector makes a GOOD and observant point; but let’s consider the whole “picture”...

Please allow me to digress... Russ – Indy – his “irritation” to the “dynasty” of CCU-owned WFBQ... Russ and I might-as-well be TWINS [but I was NOT known to “hotline” the overnight op about how he read the liner-card]. We both function[ed] “out-of-the-box” 24/7; we both used our college Fraternity experience to finely-apply the art of “hazing”; and we woke-up in the morning excited about the prospect that the CCUs [or in my case—“others”] of this world HATED us! We did what was required to make sure our fine employee’s paychecks cleared the bank. So PLEASE, Inspector—DON’T subject me to the condescension that I don’t understand “the business of broadcasting”... Remember—I sold a stable of radio stations for 9.7X what I paid for them when the ink was barely-dry on the TelCom Bill!

As for “HIPPO-critical”... PLEASE search my posts on this board, and you’ll find that accolades barley-lag criticism. I’m well-known to support “the small guy” AND an “original idea” on this board!

Unlike Russ, I did not survive broadcast ownership long-enough to have to deal with the HD dilemma. Russ jumped-in FULL FORCE—offering a compelling alternative on HD-2 and HD-3 services... NOW, [eighteen months later], the “Colon Blow” infomercials have appeared to greet those [VERY FEW] that have purchased HD radios—many to “enjoy” the “stations between the stations” on their trek thru that malaise known as “”I-465” at the height of 5:20 PM Indy rush-hour traffic. Ask yourself the intellectually-honest question: WHAT does that say about the value of the highly-touted “stations between the stations”? This has NOTHING to do with “choice”!

Well, personally I can't/don't listen to them because I am unwilling to plunk down so many devalued American Dollars for an HD receiver, when way too many are just not good quality...the Sony notwithstanding. I'm holding out for a pocket sized radio, preferably one that uses AA batteries instead of a proprietary rechargeable dealie.

But I am aware of the streams' existence. As a radio geek, it's only obligatory to keep track of these things. :)

Money is money, and there will always be short sighted money grabbers. You can hear those same infomercials on many, many talk stations, even some that are ratings dominant (for now.)

Some people just don't have the fortitude to turn down the quick buck while working on long term success. In my opinion, the damage you can do to your station's reputation airing that dreck is irreparable, but that doesn't stop many, many stations from airing them.

I agree with you on this 100 percent.

VERY GOOD POINT, RadioMan! You are an obvious apologist for “corporate radio”-but I AGREE with you on your post! ;)

Integrity in radio? Haha.
I still can't figure out why ClearChannel would use their clear channel on 1530 to broadcast the late great Reverend Bible Thumper at night?

Brother S from Walterboro... GOD! ... [pardon the pun]—he’s a “joke” [and embarrassment] within his home-state of South Carolina! You’d thought the man was satisfied with short-wave—NOT! Yet, CCU cannot pass on nibbling on that tit!

I can recall the utter-frustration of the-former 1530-WSAI's “Dangerous Dan” Allen [an AWESOME PD] when his brilliant execution of “Real Oldies” was interrupted by that mobile-home-loving huckster.

Is their ANYTHING “corporate radio” won’t do for a quick buck ::)
