HD Turnoffs or just down for the count?

Getting back to HD stations in CT that have switched off HD, there is WEBE, with its powerful signal on 107.9.
Their HD signal has been off the air for months. I found out from the station that there were overheating issues related to the HD equipment, and the fact that it is located by a power station.
They are in no rush to switch it back on, given the costs to boost the cooling. I was told that HD may return during the winter months. They also feel that their signal has very good audio, and does not sound significantly better with HD.

They're right. When it WAS working, I compared the two. The analog sounds FINE. The only reason to have HD is for the extra "channels", but that causes a sacrifice on the "HD1". It's a catch-22 that's really best avoided altogether!

If only FMeXtra radios were more readily (and cheaply!) available! I remember when FMeXtra was supposed to be CHEAP and COMMON... still waiting!! At least with that, you DON'T need expensive transmitter modifications! It plugs in like an SCA generator.
I think WEBE was the first station in either Hartford or New Haven to activate an HD3 stream. They were carrying ESPN Radio there for a while.

PS: WYCM (that little 100 watt Christian station that was on the HD3) was UNIQUE for THIS AREA! Why? It was the ONLY station playing current CCM! Now that we have K-Love down in the NYC area, we have ONE CCM station on the dial. ONE!!!

The majority of the programming was specifically CCM? I can say that until recently I was getting one of those on 96.1 from Long Island, but as I'm sure you you know they have changed.

I was counting religious stations in general which includes things like gospel stations and CCM's and so on.

I actually undercounted and there are 11! There used to be more like 540 WLIE, but they have changed as well. I originally put together the list but then cut out as the post was massive... From Middletown CT, here's what I get:

AM
01 - 570 WMCA (though Radio Rejos in Havana Cuba does tend to give this one a bit of grief at night)
02 - 730 WACE (a bit weak but it's there)
03 - 740 WNYH
04 - 990 WXCT
1080 WTIC (You know, that the 3pm show "State and Church", just kidding)
05 - 1170 WCTF
06 - 1190 WLIB (They are gospel)
1480 WKND - I was couting this one, but they are much less gospel except on Sunday
07 - 1500 WFIF
08 - 1550 WSDK
1620 Pirate *(not counting this one)
1640 Pirate *(not counting this one either)

FM
09 - 88.9 WJMJ
10 - 89.7 W209BK (used to think this one was a pirate as the sound quality was so bad and the short spacing to WGBH, but they are legit somehow)
93.1 W226AG (This WJMJ relay has been actually taking out Mix 93.1 in Springfield sometimes, but I'm beging very generous today and not counting it)
94.3 WYBC (if you've ever tuned in on a sunday, you'd never know this station isn't a full-time religious station, but I didn't count it either)
98.3 W252AV (I'm going to not count this one as they are the same program as W209BK of WSGG, but I really should count it as it's yet another religious signal)
11 - 104.9 WIHS (as close as I am to the transmitter sometimes I think it's on all frequencies!)
105.3 Restoration Radio (yes, another pirate, and no, I'm not counting it either)
107.1 W296AO (It's not often, but I do get this under the adjacent splash of WCCC, I'm also not couting this one either)

For 540, you mean WLIX... that was a combo of CCM and talk programming, about 60% music.

OK, I will RENUMBER this list, for FULL-TIME Christian stations with a bold number in parenthesis. :D

AM
* (1) * 01 - 570 WMCA
ZERO music. None. Not one blessed note. They also carry some decidedly NON-Christian programming. I'm still counting them, though, since the MAJORITY of their airtime is Christian programming with Biblical standards.

02 - 730 WACE (a bit weak but it's there)
"Dollar-a-hollar" - has no discernible standards. Anyone and everything that can pay for airtime is allowed.

03 - 740 WNYH
Since when?? The only thing even SLIGHTLY resembling Christian on that station, was back around 2006, when they were running a 3-cd changer with old hymns on it for a few months. The audio back then was PRISTINE. Then it went to some kind of Oldies format and sounded ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC!!! Then it went to some kind of "Buy airtime here!" hawker announcement at every break. Then it went Korean(?) Now it's something else, non-English.

*** Where is WVNE 760?? ???

04 - 990 WXCT
That's NOT a Christian station to my knowledge! (Non-English doesn't count... I see you didn't count WADS 690, which is Spanish, and full-time Christian.)

1080 WTIC (You know, that the 3pm show "State and Church", just kidding)
They are MOST DEFINITELY NOT a Christian station!

05 - 1170 WCTF
Harold Camping. 'nuff said.

06 - 1190 WLIB (They are gospel)
Full-time? If not, they don't count.

1480 WKND - I was couting this one, but they are much less gospel except on Sunday
That doesn't count. Only FULL-TIME Christian formats count. :)

* (2) * 07 - 1500 WFIF
Owned by Blount Communications. I worked there for 20 years. They had some music back then, but NO MUSIC AT ALL anymore. :'( However, they have HIGH STANDARDS for what they will allow on their airwaves! The teaching programs MUST hold to a very specific set of Bible-based guidelines. IOW, this is NOT a "dollar-a-hollar" station. :)

* (3) * 08 - 1550 WSDK
Also owned by Blount Communications. The ONLY station in that Group with any significant MUSIC time. (Morning drive.) This one is also BRAND NEW. Signed-on in February.

NOTE: WVNE 760 is also a Blount Comms station, in Worcester.

1620 Pirate *(not counting this one)
1640 Pirate *(not counting this one either)
Probably not pirates, probably Part 15'ers, running Rangemaster transmitters.

FM
09 - 88.9 WJMJ
Specifically Catholic. Whole different category.

10 - 89.7 W209BK (used to think this one was a pirate as the sound quality was so bad and the short spacing to WGBH, but they are legit somehow)
That's a translator. Probably tiny power level.

93.1 W226AG (This WJMJ relay has been actually taking out Mix 93.1 in Springfield sometimes, but I'm beging very generous today and not counting it)
Translator, again. Not a "station".

94.3 WYBC (if you've ever tuned in on a sunday, you'd never know this station isn't a full-time religious station, but I didn't count it either)
They are most definitely NOT a Christian station! Just because they have a handful of Christian and/or Gospel shows on Sunday, does NOT qualify them as a Christian format.

98.3 W252AV (I'm going to not count this one as they are the same program as W209BK of WSGG, but I really should count it as it's yet another religious signal)
Another translator. Doesn't count.

* (4) * 11 - 104.9 WIHS (as close as I am to the transmitter sometimes I think it's on all frequencies!)
They have been a full-time Christian station for decades. They also have high standards for Bible-based content. They are also non-commercial, listener-supported.

105.3 Restoration Radio (yes, another pirate, and no, I'm not counting it either)
107.1 W296AO (It's not often, but I do get this under the adjacent splash of WCCC, I'm also not couting this one either)

OK, so that gives me FOUR (make that FIVE, with WVNE) that are actually FULL-TIME, English-language, non-denominational Christian stations with BIBLICAL STANDARDS... only TWO of which play music, and that, only PART TIME. (WIHS & WSDK)

Now we have K-Love out of New Rochelle, NY at 96.7, (WKLV-FM) FULL-TIME Contemporary Christian Music. :D
I needed to build a directional antenna just to pick up K-Love's signal!

So, here is what I can hear on a decent radio at my house, in West Haven:

WMCA 570 (Zero music)
WADS 690 (Spanish Christian)
WFIF 1500 (Daytime only, zero music)
WIHS 104.9 (Mostly talk, only SOME music.)

That's 4. Go down to Fairfield County, and WIHS is gone. WFIF disappears in Fairfield. (WFIF = We Fade In Fairfield) ;D All you have down there is WADS and WMCA. NOW, thank the LORD, there is K-Love!!

740 WNYH and 990 WXCT are both Spanish Christian Stations. They both run Radio Cantico Nuevo.

1190 WLIB plays Black Gospel Music full-time.

1480 WKND has several multi-hour blocks of Black Gospel Music and teaching mixed in with their R&B Hits/R&B Oldies Format.

Years back 540 was WLIX with a religious format, but I'm thinking Kraze is referring to the fact they were running Spanish Christian programming a few years back. At one time (before moving to WNYH) they were running Radio Cantico Nuevo. They had some other Spanish Christian Network before that. Today they play West Indian Music, which sounds like a cat going through a garbage disposal.

Yes WJMJ 88.9 (and 93.1/107.1) runs some Catholic progamming, but they also run a lot of mainstream music.

WSGG and its translators on 89.7 and 98.3 run Spanish Religious Programming as Radio Aviamiento. They got their start as a pirate on 97.1 back in the day. It's funny when back in October when I was working in Wallingford I was following a vehicle in Meriden that said Radio Aviamiento 98.3 FM.

1530 WDJZ runs a lot of religious programming too. Geared to the African American and Jamacian communities. But they also have some non-religious programming on it.

DH Turnoffs

Radio Shack has announced it will no longer carry their HD Radio. No market. Sad, since RS was one of the early promoter of HD.

By their own foolishness, Radio Shack has become a mostly-ignored player in recent years. :-\ They've even gone so far as to remove the word "Radio" and just call themselves "The Shack". Barf! :p Most of us here know them as "Cell Phone Shack"... OK, off that soap box. ;D

Well, that's another store to drop the product line. Who's left carrying these receivers? Best Buy? Anyone else?

Like Quad in the 70's and AM Stereo in the 80's, I would expect the stations that bought into it, will realize the fact it's a lost cause, and start shutting it down and scrapping the equipment. Why even keep it inline, when it's nothing more than a liability & adds additional failure points to the transmission system? ???

About the only thing worth keeping would be the HD transmitters, themselves. Plug an analog exciter into them, and they can be used as backup transmitters. :)

I was referring ONLY to English-language, full-time (or very CLOSE TO full time) Christian stations WITH BIBLICAL STANDARDS. That disqualifies "dollar-a-hollar" operations like WDJZ, etc. :)

I didn't know that WLIB completely changed format. When did that happen? 8)
