It has begun... Clear Channel was the first local company to announce what their HD2 channels would be on their respective stations. Here's the rundown:

MEMPHIS:
Urban AC KJMS HD2 "Smooth Jazz"
Classic Rock WEGR HD2 "Deep Tracks"
Gospel WHAL HD2 "Tejano"
Urban WHRK HD2 "Classic Hip-Hop"
These multicasts will launch on WEDNESDAY (2/1).

Ummm, this makes sense, until you get to WHAL. Tejano??? In Memphis??? On a GOSPEL station? They'd have done better to do Classic Southern Gospel or something along those lines to stay close to the format, but this makes no sense at all. No one who listens to Tejano would go anywhere near 95.7, even on a sideband channel. Maybe they meant: "Tejanospel"?

Or better yet, why not "Classic Gospel" like Mahalia Jackson, Rev. C.J. Franklin, Shirley Caesar, etc.......

Radio is getting just too high tech for me. Getting rid of turntables and carts I understand....but Hi Def? A station has one frequency, but with HD can carry several different formats simultaniously? Something just doesn't sound right about that. Is the FCC OK with this? This sounds just too easy. My main problem is......how many people have an HD radio? From my experience, you have to have really high end speakers to tell the difference in the first place.

Makes VERY good sense. One of the few reasons I listen to Max is thier 1970s AOR type album cuts.

I wish they went with a Dance direction, but Classic Hip-Hop will do.

Hmmm...well we haven't heard from Entercom yet.

As I understand it, All Blues Channel, All Comedy, and All News, and no specifics on which frequencies will get what, or much else, like who's doing all of it! (Easy guesses though) Supposedly to start in a couple of weeks.

Well, someone would have to buy a HD radio first.

WHBQ HD - Energy 107.5 & a half - 30 years of dance hits
KXHT HD - all dirty south rap

but something tells me the pig will be resurrected on one of is subs
wonder if that would make anyone buy a new radio?

i have xm and a 525.00 deck thats only 1yr old and they dont make a better fm turner in the car that i can find than the one i have so i wonder if there will be some add on tuners to plug into you aux input i still have 1 free

Judging by the enormous poularity, not to mention the ratings that this cutting-edge format enjoyed while it was on the air, It's nothing short of mathematical certainty that the resurrection of "The Pig" would drive people to do whatever is necessary to procure the technology to once again experience it. As far as ground breaking broadcast formatics are concerned, only "The Phantom" could come as close to pure and genius unadulterated radio art. To be able to hear Michelle Shocked and Widespread Panic in the same set again....well, one can dream.<P ID="signature">______________

CC ought to go for either MOYL or Easy Listening (like the old WEZI-FM) with WREC.

It won't, at least not for YEARS, because nobody, and I mean NOBODY has an HD receiver. AM Stereo all over again. Until there's an HD radio available to the general public that you can get at Best Buy, Wal Mart & Radio Shack for 50 bucks this ain't gonna fly and all the money broadcasters are dumping into it is being wasted. XM was the only one who did it right in the beginning, with a big marketing campaign years before Sirius decided they had to get with the program. It took 5 years and NOW people are paying attention. And the receivers are NOW startig at 50 bucks. They were $300 when receivers first hit the market.

HD radio has one hell of an uphill battle ahead. Car manufacturers have satellite car receivers and package deals made with XM and Sirius. Show me even ONE package deal with an embedded HD/Satellite/AM/FM receiver? Hell, you can get an auto DVD player to watch PORN with while stuck in traffic on I-240 but there's not even a hint of an HD receiver for cars out there!

Naa, neither Flinn nor any other terrestrial broadcaster has anything to worry about for a few years while this mess is sorted out. <P ID="signature">______________
