HD3 Something different

CBS Atlanta has WAOK on its HD-3. It IS something different.

This may be just the type programming to motivate people to get HD radios. WSB-AM is also available on the HD2 channel of "The River" 97.1 FM.
Putting popular AM signals on HD channels is a smart move. Programming MUST provide something dramatically different if they really expect the public to embrace HD radio!

You may be on to something there. Star 94 used to have The Zone on their HD3. I was nice being able to listen to the Tech games.

Star 94 HD2 & HD3 Stations?

Does anybody know what happened to the HD2 and HD3 stations that Star 94 was broadcasting? In addition to the Zone on HD3, the HD2 station was a Jack-type variety station that leaned heavily into the 80's metal and 90's alternative with modern day pop thrown in. Rodney said that these stations were down temporarily because the station was upgrading but that was 8 months ago.

I have heard that the enigineers where told to shut it down until a HD plan could be put in place.

It was pretty cool having three channels on the same frequency.

GA Tech used the HD3 to provide audio of the games into the dorms for the students.

Mixed emotions on HD. I like the thought of variety and the available options.
There are only so many listeners in a market though. If you currently have twenty stations, you slice up the pie twenty ways.

Add in 40 to 60 new channels and that pie shrinks. Could any one station garner respectable ratings? Ten stations? I know in today's world, there are a lot of other options. i-Pods, XM, streaming... it just seems to me that radio is trying to cut its own throat.

I think that is the idea. Since it stopped being about "THE station" back when Merle and Edna owned IT... a cluster can generate enough bodies/ears to sell (advertising) as a GROUP.

For the first time, I listened to a HD radio the other day. I just happened to see one in the automotive section of Wal Mart in Alpharetta. I think it was a JVC. It picked up ONE station in HD, and that was 96.1. Despite being able to hear full, clear, stereo analogue on most of the full-power signals (94.1, 94.9, 95.5, 96.1, 97.1, 98.5, 99.7, 101.5, 103.3 and 106.7), with 105.7 probably the strongest signal in that area...practically comes in on your tooth fillings...96.1 is the only station that would lock into HD mode. Not impressed.

There is a certain risk in that approach however, depending upon what demos are being bought by what advertisers. Cluster selling can work A18-49 or A25-54 or other broad cells, but those low numbers on something that even narrows down by gender can be a killer.
