hdtv question

we maybe going from cable tv to satellite tv and we have 2 hdtv tv set, i was was wondering do we still need a converter box from the satellite tv company even though we have hdtv sets already?

i also want to thank rp for his answer and anybody else's post's answers.

thanks captex.

You'll need the satellite TV company's receivers. And they both charge extra for HD programming. For DirecTv it's about $10 a month.

the internal ATSC tuner on your HD set will only receive and decode signals being transmitted over the
traditional over-the-air channels which have been retained from analog TV (2-51, although almost nobody
is using the low-end of that). Your satellite signal is a microwave that needs to be amplified and decoded.
Plus the satellite companies change their coding frequently to prevent theft of their signals.

Not only that, not many TV's have the tuners in them to decode DirecTV/Dish Network signals. That's because both satellite carriers operate in much higher frequency bands. For TV's that have the tuners in them will require the card that authorizes you to receive their signal. Also, unless a person is gonna Tivo a lot of shows, extra boxes will be needed for devices other than TV's.
