Headphones

Audio Technica headphones are great when BSW sells them at 5 pair for $89. They remind me of my favorites, the old Sennheisers.

We have so many walk out or get trampled that we don't pay good money for headphones because of this. I want a decent set of cans for the times I have to use them but can't pay $200 to $250 and have to buy 5 new sets every couple of months. We did this early on and the life of the headphones is not better for more expensive headphones than it is for cheap phones.

My favorite phones now are the Bose set I use on trips to listen to noise canceling. I keep them in their case and have 3 years on this set.

Not that I can afford them, but I just noticed, when browsing through the latest Radio World magazine, that SONY has added two new models to the MDR-7500 series. They are the MDR-7510 and MDR-7520. Santa...

AKG K-240s have always been my favorite (other than electrostatics that must be handled with care). The new ones have replaceable cords and run about 100 bux.
I've wondered how those sound compared to the K240DF. A friend of mine has literally the last DF to roll off the line, and it sounds pretty darn good.

The new Shures are very comfortable, and while the 440 sounds respectable, the other two models aren't worth using.

I use Beyerdynamic DT-880 Pro 250 ohms, with 10 bands of linear parametric EQ for correction, and I have only heard 2 rooms & setups that can match the accuracy. I wouldn't say they beat them. :)

Finally... I'll drop a tip on these cheap but greats...

AKG K81DJ cans for about $50 are by far the best value cans in the under-$100 category. The frequency response is totally amazing (aka flat), and beats headphones costing many hundreds more. However they are not circum-aural, so you'll have to be OK with pressure on your ears. Personally I'm not, I could never use them for work, even if I didn't have a better sounding pair around.

I know people love them, but I HATE the MDR-7506. Sounds thin, nasal midrange and doesn't cup my ear (that could just be my ears and head). Tried them on air, and didn't like them. Tried to use them to listen to audio processing, and had the same result.

My Audio-Technicas, Sennheisers and the big Shures sound better than the Sony.

My $.02, your results may vary...

My jocks get nothing but the best that $20 can buy. If they want something else, they get their own!
Big spender! We get the $6 specials at the computer store. Add the $2 for the adaptor that always geos missing with the cheap headphones it's still a bargain.

For me, it all depends on what I'm using the headphones for. If I am live on the air with mic processing, I prefer to use the Sony 7506's...if, however, I am listening critically - setting up processing, listening to my favorite music, I will forever choose the AKG 240's.

However, a friend of mine has a more expensive pair of AKG's that run about $300, I've never heard anything like them. I truly believe AKG makes the best cans in the world.
