Pete Davis has been let go.
Kimmer's vacation was, ahem, not scheduled.
Is it Planet Radio redux??

Pete must've been let go today then because I heard him as late as yesterday afternoon filing taped Braves reports during the afternoon news

Kimmer's page on the GST website is blank...but his picture is still up on the home page. Hmmm...?

Pete was on with the Regular Guys this morning as usual.
I assume if you say he's let go that covers all of Clear Channel?
If its true he will be missed.

Absolutely.

Now GravesRadio will have to scour the earth for another talent who can use a sound effect of Homer Simpson saying "D'oh!" 3 or 4 times a day for the next 15 years.

Pete was let go after his morning duties were complete.

Pete was let go today, after 17 years at GST. I wonder who'll be doing sports in the morning.

That really stinks, I enjoyed listening to him (and I don't like sports)
He was a decent sub for Kimmer too
So since I know nothing about behind the scenes radio did he do something wrong or just management changes?

> Pete was let go today, after 17 years at GST.

1) Brad Nessler
2) Steve Holman
3) Matt Stewart
4) Steve Getty
5) Nancy Zintak
6) Eric Seidel
7) Harry Beadle
8) Bill Edge
9) Denis O'Hayer
10)Clark Howard
11)Neal Boortz
12)Sean Hannity

This is a short list of folks who've either been canned or were smart enough to see trouble coming and got out of that hell hole.

Nancy Zintak was responsible for Harry Beadle, Matt Stewart, Bill Edge, Denis O'Hayer, Howard Gunther and Tom Hughes being terminated in what became known as the Memorial Day Massacre in 1997 for her disasterous Planet Radio format. It only made sense to have her hauled out of there after a few months.

WGST officially died the day Sean Hannity left and Ian Punnett (hired by Zintak) took over in late 1996.

I too have enjoyed Pete through the years with his own shows and his filling in for others. I found him to be entertaining and underappreciated at GST. My boys have grown up with Pete and feel the same way.

It is odd that he was let go today as I had thought about posting about Art Mehring filling in for The King and how the other twenty-five GST listeners felt about Art’s performance verses that of Pete’s. I guess it is not that important now . . .

Pete Davis was the best Kimmer replacement, hands down. Some may have issue's with his sportcasting, but as a stand-alone current events host, he was easy on the ears.
( except for the time he 'imitated ' Dick Clark's'Strokin' New Years Eve appearance, that was pretty bad by shock standards:)

Damn shame. Wonder if they will even have a 'sports guy' anymore? Farm it out to FoxSports prerecorded bits? Or will they use someone else from the cluster?

Will Stu Klitenic be a part of the Braves broadcasts once again? If so, perhaps he will get a bigger role.

I happened to enjoy Pete Davis' sports segments for a long time, when he was more irreverent and less preachy. Regardless of though, 17 years at the same station is quite a run. Best of luck to him.

Pete Davis is gone? Good.

It should have happened years ago.
Edited by Braswell on 02/17/06 06:45 AM.

Good Grief! You mean to imply that these people were psychic and knew that Clear Channel or Randall Bloomquist was/were coming??? Really! People in radio know when it's time to bail -- it's internal. Remember the old WRNG (Neal Boortz was there) or how about WCNN in it's all news incarnation? Lou Adler for God's sake was willing to take a trip down to Atlanta to work at that loser of a place!

It's what happens in radio -- you work somewhere, you leave. So Pete spent the last 17 years in one place. Let's see if he can get a job somewhere else. Others do and can. Sheesh. It's the business.

You edited my reply?

Pete Davis went on the air to call the people at WSB "Classless bastards" after Keith Kalland died. He went off on how 750 had ignored his death in one of their newscasts. He didn't mention how WSB knew about the death first but held the story to allow GST to announce it first.

Classless bastards is a direct quote from Pete Davis. He used it and should be remembered for it.

You don't have to have psychic powers to know when the boat has sprung a leak. When the wind changes direction and starts blowing in storms, it is time to go.

Pete Davis always had a very high opinion of his own talent, but he just didn't have the chops for major-market. Another poster above nails it dead-on...those endless Simpsons and Sopranos drops are soooo small-market and really embarrassing. Pete sounded like a bad college radio sports reporter trying to be funny and wondering why nobody gets his joke. For a guy in his late 40's, he really lacked maturity on the air.

He always sounded like he was reading from a script, he had a marble-mouth, and an absolutely TERRIBLE attitude behind the scenes... just ask the people who worked with him. He was just not a nice guy, according to many.

For example: He would trash Scott Ferrell in private meetings when Scott was auditioning on WGST... and then months later after Ferrall was hired at Real Radio, Pete would beg Scott to let him fill in on Scott's show...telling him what a supporter of Scott's he always was, and that he was so much funnier than the Kimmer.

He should have been fired instantly after the WSB/Kalland incident, because making a mistake as embarrassing as that proves that you are too stupid to be on the radio. The truth is many PD's over the years tried to fire Pete, but Marc Chase, the GENIUS of Atlanta Talk Radio and King of the 2 share, protected Pete and his mediocrity for years and years.

Only on a station as dysfunctional as WGST could a guy with such little chops and so much baggage have lasted for so long.

Pete did do a good job filling in for Kimmer, when he wasn't talking about sports that is...
