...on the Rome country station that gets into Atlanta a little...occurred to me that I havent heard one since the big Bush debacle. Kind of amazing when you consider they were "it" in their genre for 2-3 years. Wonder if Kicks and Y are ready to have them back?

The test will come when the Dixie Chicks finally come out with a new album, reportedly some time next year. By then three years will have passed since Kicks and Eagle took the Dixie Chicks off the air, to no apparently ill effect to the stations in any way. Last time I checked in March, during the two year anniversary of Natalie's ill-advised commentary, Kicks/Eagle GM Victor Sansone said Dixie Chick songs in testing remained near the bottom of the testing field, along with the likes of "Achy Breaky Heart." If there's still a huge portion of the audience who think nasty thoughts when "Ready to Run" plays, why play it?

This Dixie Chicks site http://chickoholic.tripod.com/DixieChicks/ provides some good updates on how they're progressing on their album, which appears to be less country than "Home," maybe purposely strategically so. In the September 22nd issue of Rolling Stone magazine, an interview with producer Rick Rubin gives a hint as to what the next CD will be like. "Instead of making a country album that had a rock side," he says, "we wanted to do a rock album that leaned country, like Petty or Gram Parsons."

Really feel bad for the Dixie Chicks. While I definitely don't agree wight what they said, their music should not have been removed from the airwaves just because they said it. Music and Politics should be two differant animals. Seperate. Play music because it sounds good...not because the artist/group hasn't said something that offended people.

In a lot of cases, the stations pulled the Chicks because listeners made it clear they didn't want to hear them. Call me naive, but why play an artist or group that your listeners don't seem to want?

You nailed it: DC tunes were not pulled because of what Natalie said,
but because of the listener's negative reaction. The rumors of mandates
from CC demanding their tunes be pulled are bogus. However, one of the
Dickey Boys did personally send a memo banning them from Cumulus stations.

Two sides to this. The station can play what they want, but if we're going to be consistent, we'll have to ban any mention of:

1) FDR because he didn't fight the Russians
2) Truman for the same thing
3) Eisenhower because he didn't start a war with China
4) JFK because he did everything to avoid war with the Russians
5) Johnson because he didn't use nukes in Vietnam
6) Nixon for ending the war
7) Jerry Ford, see #s1 and 3
8) Carter...we'll, any president who says he's for peace is a "wimp"
9) Reagan for offering the Reykjavík deal
10) Clinton, see #8
11) GHWB for not nuking Iraq

In short, EVERY president has tried to avoid war. Since FDR, only this president has started one for no reason whatsoever. Whether it's a singer or an equally insignificant DJ, if we can't speak our mind without being wiretapped, what the hell makes us different than being under Stalin?

And yet, so many people on this board can't seem to grasp that one simple fact.

It doesn't matter whether you like or dislike Bush.
It doesn't matter whether you agree or disagree with the war in Iraq.
It doesn't matter whether you're liberal or conservative.
And it certainly doesn't matter what all the "experts" on this board believe.

Those stations aren't on the air to validate your political beliefs. As distasteful as it apparently is to some of you, they're on the air to make money.

If you think it's SO gosh-darned important that Atlantans be forced to listen to the Dixie Chicks, whether they want to or not, then go out and buy your own radio station and play the Dixie Chicks until your little heart is content. But in the real world, when you're trying to pitch your product to a group of listeners and those listeners make it clear they don't want to HEAR any more Dixie Chicks, then guess what? You don't PLAY any more Dixie Chicks! It really IS that simple.

Just a bit too much coffee today, huh? From what I see the DC's have managed to erase whatever career they once had. Maybe it's time Natalie Maines returned to wherever she came from and took up being a waitress again. At least there if you make a politically incorrect statement the worst you'll get is a bad tip.

But none of those are remotely relevant to this subject UNLESS they were the subject of listener preference NOT to hear a particular artist.

If any of them were, then I see a point, but otherwise ...

If missing the point could be measured in Arbitron, Sexyvirilestud would have a 100 share.

Shhhh....they're listening

Perhaps I missed something. What Government entity or agency or representative there of has ever said 1 thing about stations shouldn't play the DC's because of what they said. There are some other well founded area's where the current administration has stomped on some liberties but this isn't one of them.

This decision has been made by private enterprises and their clients. The 1st Amendment says Congress shall pass no law abridging the right of the presss, speech, etc ....which has been expanded to government...but not to to private property or businesses.

This has never been an issue about government censorship. This is an issue about people being held accountable for their statements and their fans making it clear that they didin't wish to hear them anymore. I guarantee that if enough people wanted the DC's back on the air, the stations would put them back.

ICE-T had a album in the 80's called Freedom of Speech (Just watch what you say.) I think it summed up Freedom of Speech in this country quite well.

Your right. Radio Stations do exsist to make money first, and fore most. But I still care about the music. Call me misguided. Call me a fool. Sirius, and XM Radio show that others do as well. Wish land based broadcasting would get the hint!
______________
" All my life I've always had my *#@$ together...Problem is I've never been able to pick it up" (Burt Reynolds "The Longest yard")

The fact of the matter is, Kicks & Eagle are doing just fine not playing the Dixie Chicks. Their ratings the past two-plus years have been solid. And if they test music and it doesn't test well, they won't touch it. If their fans start showing more positive reaction to "Ready to Run" and "Goodbye Earl" and "Travelin' Soldier," they'll bring the Chicks back.

What will be truly curious is if they'll give them a chance when they come out with new music. Then again, the Chicks might not even be pitching their music to country come 2006 if the direction of the album goes more rock.

About half the country stations play the Chicks now and half don't...

Other than your post being totally irrelevant to the discussion it also contains some glaring errors. FDR avoided war with the Russians but did everything in his power to get us in WW2. Some historians even believe he sacrificed Pearl Harbor to accomplish this. Truman didn't fight the Russians but did the Chi Comms in Korea. Ike didn't start one but did end one in Korea. JFK did increase activity in a little place called Viet Nam. Bill Clinton did bomb Bosnia and aspirin factories around the world to distract people from Monica and Paula.

If people wanted to hear the Dixie Chicks, radio stations would play the Dixie Chicks. Pure and simple. There is a lot of music that tests bad by artists like Charlie Daniels that doesn't get played. You can't ask for a bigger flag waver the Charlie.

I don't cotton to extremists on either end. But one thing that amazes about the left and left leaning is they are real prone to call for boycotts against people they disagree with (ask Dr. Laura) but when somebody disagrees with them and calls for a boycott its a crime and their rights are being infringed. Go figure...

uh, 'scuse me, but who exactly is missing the point here? ;-)
