Heard, But Never Seen

If you're going to get into characters never seen or heard,
add Sarah, the telephone operator; and Juanita, Barney's
girlfriend at the diner on "The Andy Griffith Show."

Also on M*A*S*H*U*G*A:

Former regular characters (Radar, Frank Burns) being talked to on the phone, but not shown, or for that matter, heard. You just see & hear the other side of the conversation.

That didn't just happen on MASH. The final episode of The Cosby Show was on TV Land recently, and it had Denise calling in, since Lisa Bonet was off the show by that time.

And of course this type of call is what started Bob Newhart's career, and he used it on his TV shows.

In one of the syndicated episodes of Mama's Family, in the one episode where Bubba and Mama get their high school diplomas, Eunice calls Mama to tell her she and Ed are not coming to the graduation. According to what I have read in the past on other websites it was actually Carol Burnett who was on the phone talking Thelma "Mama" Harper.

However, I don't think it was. By the time the syndicated episodes were produced, Carol Burnett and producer Joe Hamilton just through a messy divorce and not only was Carol NOT speaking to Joe Hamilton, but it was reported at the time she wasn't speaking to Vicki Lawrence, Ken Berry and Dorothy Lyman either.
And the credits didn't list Carol either if it was really her. If that really was Carol Burnett on the phone, I would had been shocked.

Speaking of voices on the telephone, the funniest one I ever heard was Spencer Tracy's wife in the movie It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I think it was Selma Diamond.

I don't remember seeing Leonard's mother either but she isn't the one with the horrible voice. That mom would be Howard Wolowitz's mom (Howard is played by Simon Helberg and has the Moe Howard haircut).

This season there was an episode where Leonard's mother paid him a visit. She was played by Christine Baranski. She was a psychologist that had little to no motherly nurturing skills. Through the mother's cold and clinical way of speech it sounded like Leonard was raised like a lab rat in a grand experiment. Sheldon, of course, found her fascinating and hung out with her more than Leonard. In the end, Sheldon got Leonard's mom to loosen up by playing Rock Band on the Xbox where she rocked out singing "Anyway You Want It" by Journey.

Can't forget Lily Tomlin as "Ernestine" the telephone operator (with no one on the other end). "Your instrument perhaps might not be in the perfect working order-snort " :D

This is more in the "never seen or heard" category...

Commisioner Gordon's secretary, Bonnie.

Maybe heard on one or two episodes, but I'm not sure.

Marge the secretary on the Dick Van Dyke Show.

Also on that show, would Sally's boyfriend Herman Glimpsher, count? Or was he too much of a wimp to go on camera? :D(I haven't seen anywhere close to all the episodes, so my apologies if he shouldn't beon this list.)

I could be wrong, but Les Nessman's land-lady (neighbor) on WKRP who would beat on the wall if he was too noisy or had a female there :-[

Herman was mostly just talked about, but he did appear in 5 episodes, played by Bill Idelson.

Idelson also appeared in the Reunion special "The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited" in 2004..He was known for radio work as far back as the 1930's..His biggest role being Rush On "Vic ans Sade"..He also became an accomplished writer of Television scripts..

If I remember correctly there was one episode where he was totally out of character when he got into a fight
With Jerry Van Dyke when he thought he was after Sally. Idelson was usually very timid except in this episode.

Today I was thinking about the first season of The Lucy Show...for some reason I think there was an episode or two where Vivian Bagly ( Vivian Vance ) was talking ( well getting nasty with him actually ) to her ex-husband on the phone. Of course I think its a safe bet to say that many viewers at the time had this "idea" that it was "Fred Mertz" who she was refering to as her "ex-husband" even though of course "I Love Lucy" and "The Lucy Show" were two totally seperate shows.

Who else could possibly be Vivian Vance's TV husband other than William Frawley?

"the guy who made the public-address announcements on MASH"

Wasn't that done by Gary Burghoff, who was very visible in the role of Radar and probably making those announcements in character, for at least part of the show's run--and didn't they have Jamie Farr (who played Max Klinger) do it late in the show's run as well? In short, didn't the PA job fall to the 4077th's company clerk, whoever he was?
