Heard The Band Lately?

The Band is definatly going Classic Hits now, and I'm starting to hear quite a few oldies as well, so far I like what I'm hearing. Thoughts?

I'm looking at the Just Played readout and it doesn't look much different than 3 weeks ago. Jeez, how often do they play "American Pie" now? And there's "Brown-Eyed Girl" for the 10 billionth time. Wake me when they're in vintage KFRC territory.

Probably just you. It sounds more like Classic Hits than Oldies. If they start playing Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, The Big Bopper & Elvis Presley, then it would sound alot like Oldies.

That is true, there is no fifties music on The Band, but isn't 60's Music Considered Oldies as well?

It can be, but it depends what they're playing. The Doors' "Light My Fire" is a Classic Rock chestnut; I'm sure they play that -- and so does The Bone and K-Fox. If they play the Jose Feliciano version... then we're getting somewhere.

I assume that when a format mixes 60s hits with 70s hits, and throws in a few 80s, it crosses some imaginary threshold into "Classic Hits."

A real oldies station used to be Jim Gabbert's KOFY Nifty 1050 or the old K-101 AM 1010 Time Machine

Just flipped on KFOG and was surprised to hear "Danny's Song" by Loggins & Messina -- no, it wasn't 10@10 and that's not a song they have ever played outside of that feature. It's not Loggins or Messina's birthday... just seemed really odd. Is KFOG worried about The Band leaning towards pop? I know the new KFOG PD is "tweaking" things but that just struck me as weird.

For me, the question is, where is that threshold between Classic Hits and Classic Rock?

When you add Johnny Mann jingles?

Hahahaha!

These days, most Classic Rock stations are male- and guitar-oriented, and steer clear of anything pop-leaning. They *might* play "The Bitch is Back" but not "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Steve Miller: yes; Billy Joel: no. If they're playing "American Pie" (as The Band seems to be) they've crossed the threshhold.
