Hearst Television, Inc.

Did I just read somewhere that Hearst-Argyle is the best TV station owner in the country? I think I heard that WCVB-TV in Boston had the award for best local newscast. Not just local news, but also syndicated programming. They had a rolling rally for Ellen DeGeneres in the city when she moved from 9am to 4pm (where Oprah Winfrey used to be). I think almost all Hearst stations carried Oprah. Though Boston is a top-10 market, I'm not sure how Hearst is in some of the smaller cities. WCVB even has its own sister station WMUR in New Hampshire, which is technically part of the same market, and is almost a satellite feed of WCVB. They also own WMTW in Portland, ME and WPTZ/WNNE in the Burlington/Plattsburgh market. However, both stations are exactly the same now (they didn't used to be).

Other notable Hearst-owned stations in major cities are: WTAE Pittsburgh, WISN Milwaukee (those might have been original), and WESH Orlando. How does Hearst perform in smaller markets?

I wouldn't count out WSB in Atlanta (ABC) either. They won all news time slots in their
latest ratings and usually get more viewers than #2 and #3 combined.

WSB is owned by Cox, not Hearst.

WXII Winston-Salem, NC tends to trade off the
number-two news ranking with WGHP; WYFF Greenville, SC
is usually number one in news or just behind WSPA; WLKY
Louisville consistently wins at 5 PM (thanks to its "Y&R" lead-in)
and is usually second at 5:30, 6, and 11. (WLKY is one Hearst
station that didn't always carry Oprah; they lost her to WHAS
back around '92.)

Well, KITV/Honolulu never had "Oprah," but does air "Ellen" and is the only station in Hawaii with a 10PM nightly hour-long newscast and a weekend newscast.

I don't know, did you? Please tell us what you read and where.

I think I actually found out on their own website.

If you look right there, it says it is the largest ABC affiliate group.

Being the largest ABC affiliate group makes them the best television station owner in the country?

They mainly use ACNielsen research to source the claim, and it's very true. KOCO in OKC, KMBC and WISN in Milwaukee have claimed in on-air slogans using ratings data that they are among the top ABC affiliates in the nation, and by perception, I have to agree. No other station in Milwaukee has things together more in staff longevity and presentation than WISN.

Well, maybe that wasn't the right phrase, but I do know that WCVB here in Boston is one of their best affiliates, and I think it's the largest market with a Hearst-owned station. I was just comparing WCVB to some of the other stations.

Unless I missed it, why didn't this thread mention that Hearst owns WBAL Baltimore and WGAL Lancaster, PA (until now)?

wcvb in boston is way overrated they don't even drive that market whdh does, wcvb looks like a tabloid station on steroids(thanks to whdh) compared to five years ago.
