Heat Wave Must Have Fried Brains: WKLB Advances

Country is quite popular nationwide and even here, and the station presents it well (and pretty much
has a monopoly on the audience). Did you know there was a concert a couple years ago at Gillette
Stadium that was the highest grossing one day concert ever (in some sort of category), and it was
_country_? Kenny Chesney!

That concert also has some of the best sight seeing for a 23 year old guy like myself....just saying...

All I can say is, "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy".

The latest Arbitrends for Boston were just released and a major winner was country WKLB-FM. We know there was a fierce heat wave in early June. Were so many people's brains fried that they tuned to a C&W station in Boston?

I think I've listened to WKLB once in my life. Nonetheless, I like diversity on the radio dial. Good for WKLB.

Philadelphia has Beasleys WXTU, in the mid 80's and early 90's WXTU was usually in the top 5 it is currently in 13th place 12+

why wouldnt klb do well? look at the radio dial...the selection is lacking.

i fail to see how anyone over the age of 16 can listen to kiss or 94. and i am deeply disturbed when i find a grown adult listening to those two stations.

classic rock? i love hearing the same 10 songs by the same 5 artists. who doesnt?

sometimes people get tired of hearing weei tell us how great terry francona is. we also get tired of hearing every 5 minutes of wreck on storrow driive on 'bz (and very tired of the nightside with dan rea where the only two topics are hillary linton bashing and oil prices)

so why would anyone be surprised that wklb does well?

Country is one of many kinds of music I like and I listen sometimes to 102.5 WKLB. I'm sure more folks in Rhode Island who appreciate better country variety and have gotten sick of 98.1 WCTK are discovering WKLB. It's great that now KLB can be heard in most of the state. The Sunday Morning Country Oldies show is also great for classic country fans that have long been abandoned in RI since 1110 WHIM and 1180 WJJF.

Stu and Michael do a good job with that show. Another great country oldies show, if you like the rarities and "deeper" stuff, is "Ed The Detective" on Sunday afternoons 2-4 PM on WXBR 1460 AM from Brockton. Ed's show was previously on the old country WCAV 97.7 for many years.

People can make fun of country but it is a foundation of American music and we can't forget the
many great artists from Hank to Johnny to Garth who have brought American music to the forefront.
This is where I plug the fact that WMWM 91.7 Salem State has a fun country show, Jack's Roadhouse,
Sat from 3-6 pm and I will be filling in on the show July 19. The forecast is for (Hank) Snow; I will be paying
you (Johnny) Cash in your (Johnny) Paycheck because Parton is such sweet sorrow! Homer and
Jethro, Alabama, Tex WIlliams (Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette), and more.

Don't rock the jukebox, I wanna hear George Jones. Cause my heart ain't ready for the Rolling Stones.
More people like hillbilly music than you may think!

The 2006 performance is officially the highest grossing one-day country music show ever, taking in 4 million bucks from 56,000 paying customers.

The New England Country Music Festival has been the #1 concert series in New England every year it has been held (with Chesney headlining 4 of the 5 programs (including this year.) I know some of the resellers have tix running up to more than a grand.

Anyone who doubts the popularity of country music in the area hasn't been paying attention. It may be the usual case of "If I don't like it, I can't believe anyone else likes it." Of course, elitism usually makes an appearance in any discussion of country music, mostly in the form of anyone who likes music I don't must be a low rent yokel.

C&W is such as broad genre that stations have the room to tailor their sound to the audience, which, it appears, KLB, POR, and other Northeast stations have managed to do. I would guess that a country station in Boston would sound considerably different from one in, say, Knoxville or OKC

Regards,
TSB

From All Access, WCTK PD Steve Giuttari is out.

With the story on all Access & here on Radio-Info Providence board. Rumor has it. Former WCTK Program Director
Rick Everett will return to his old gig. If thats the case. Expect better things music wise from WCTK!!! Why settle for 10 Country Songs in a row, on KLB when WCTK gives you 12!
