Heavens To Megatron.

Hot 97's DJ Megatron was shot and killed early this morning on Staten Island. The reason for the shooting of Megatron, who was also a regular on BET's "106th and Park," was unknown.

More info from the NY Daily News.

he also did a late night show on 103.9 the beat in philly from 2002-2004

called the jump off with dj touchtone from 10pm-2am weeknights

They also have a follow-up with thoughts from former Hot 97 colleagues, including his mentor, Fatman Scoop, who also appears on BET.

That article also includes this: "Other than some hate-filled posts on some of his YouTube posts, pals insist McGriff had no enemies."

I wouldn't be surprised if cops started looking at his Youtube channel to try and find some clues.

You know what's really sad? This story is now very popular on the Internet... yet it appears that the AP story not only has misreported Megatron as previously from not New York's Hot 97, but "Kiss-FM", they even got the "Kiss" call letters wrong. So now virtually every mirrored story has the "WKRS" calls on them. :-[

Has there ever been a dj or recording artist shot who didn't have something to do with rap or hip hop music in the last 20 years? I don't remember any country or oldies djs or recording artists getting shot in the last 20 years.

Exactly RADIO TRUTH. All this does is further enlarge the image of rap/hip-hop being a ghetto/gang infested/violent music culture that it's had from the beginning. Prolly why it's not such a big deal or else this post would be getting more responses, only 1 reply on the Philly board and none over on the dentist's board. It's simply 'what else is new?' when this happens, it's to be expected.

And now this:
http://www.silive.com/eastshore/index.ssf/2011/03/dj_megatron_was_going_to_buy_p.html

Moments before he was shot dead early Sunday morning in Stapleton, DJ Megatron spoke to a friend on his phone and said he was going out to buy marijuana, according to police and law enforcement sources. The line went dead, police said, and the friend thought the disc jockey and television personality had hung up. In fact, he had been shot.

I'm curious, has anyone lost a bit of sympathy after this development?

DToTheJ: That only makes my case above and seals the deal even more. Why would there be sympathy over that development? Was on his way to buying (no matter what your thoughts on pot are, still illegal in NY) pot.

It sparks the legalization argument. Where does black talk come down on legalization of pot and/or drugs in general? I would imagine there are powerful arguments on each side and this latest incident would mobilize both sides of the debate.

I do not know him, but sending prayers out to his family!!! very sad!!! I am not a Rap person, but I was sad to hear this.

@Marc: The George Weber case was something completely, completely different...

@Kickass: I was implying if there was less sympathy as a result of that twist. It's always a tragedy when a person is slain. Then you start to hear things about what led to them...

Not really. In both cases, the victims apparently set aside caution, took a risk and paid the ultimate price. If anything positive can come out of these senseless losses, it's to always take risk into account in everything you do in life... Are the benefits worth the risks?
