I'm Ok with Bobby Hebert doing the Saints pregame/postgame and a halftime commentary and thought he did a rather fine job with it. However, I agree with both of you fully, that hiring Hebert and Wilkerson for sportstalk was awful. WWL just showed it wanted to downgrade itself with its sportstalk product. You hire 2 football guys and that's all you'll get--is football talk. I have to say, though, Bobby shockingly has more knowledge and good analysis of other sports than Wilkerson. You'd think Wilkerson would have more knowledge and follow other sports more since he is a sports reporter. But all he is to me is a lazy leechworm. You can tell he's on the radio just because he gets a joy over the fact that he's on a 50KW station and he loves hearing himself talk to people across multiple states. Bobby gives an honest effort at talking about other sports, but it's just not enough.
To sum it up, I don't understand why everyone, including WWL, thought that we would have to "replace" Buddy by hiring the same person to host his time slot and the Saints radio network. Bobby is good with Saints radio but not sportstalk. So, why not hire someone with talent for weekdays. I really feel Vince Marinello got screwed. He's been around for a while and worked with Buddy at WDSU TV.
and I have to laugh at how the Saints didn't want Buddy to be the host of Haslett's radio show starting in 2003 (because they thought Buddy was too critical of Haslett). You may remember Haslett's radio show was on Thursday nights in 2002 (it used to be Tuesdays in 2000 and I think maybe also in 2001 but I'm not sure). Well, they decided to move Haslett's show to Monday nights in 2003 as a way to not have Buddy host his show anymore. (and it was a move that REALLY ticked me off since that meant the Monday night football radio pregame show from Westwood One would be pre-empted), since Buddy broadcasted from Casino Magic in Bay St. Louis every Monday night during football season with Mike Detillier. Vince Marinello and Hokie Gajan were picked to host Haslett's show. Man, did Vince pick it up for Buddy! No softballs from Vince!
