If KVI cannot afford (in our hypothetical situation here) to hire any more market veterans it is interesting to note that C/C (via KJR-FM) just hired two very well established market veterans this spring. 6 months ago I wouldn't have bet a nickle that Clear Channel would have sprung for more talent. After blowing out quality people like Jay Kelly, Kevin Ebi, Nick Reynolds, Heidi May, Cathy Faulkner and Randy Lundquist who'd have thought you'd be hearing Bob Rivers & Company plus Steve Slaton???
Just goes to show that you never know when management will do an about face.
I also note we're making assumptions about the business models at work! Station doesn't have to "hire" talent anymore (as in contract, salary) -- can always add talent on hourly basis and keep costs down while still attracting "names" to the station. Couple that with efficiencies of voice tracking and it's conceivable to have a 6-hour airshift with four hours of timecard activity (or less if fully tracked).
LBB, you make a good point. Who knows what Slayton's contract says. If he was smart, he would charge a talent fee just for his name, and then a nice hourly fee for his tracking, if that is indeed what he is doing at KJR-FM. My educated guess is he is tracking some hours, doing some hours live, and available to go live as needed. It's a whole new world.
