Heil Microphones

Does anyone have experience with the Heil microphone line? I'm told that their top-of-the-line PR-40 is as close as any microphone has come to the legendary Shure SM 5B. Thanks.

heard good things about heil mics, never used one.david letterman has one sitting on his desk.like to hear the pr40, if it sounds like the sm5b it will be a bargain...

I heard the same thing from a couple of jocks that have worked with them - I haven't played with one yet.

Just had the opportunity to play with an Equation Audio DS-V7 and it smokes the Shure SM-7. Compared it to a new Shure 565SD, which is an SM-58 in disguise and it's absolutely awesome. Only drawback is that it has a switch but the price locally is $59.00.

I'll be checking it vs a MD-421 and RE-20.

Can't beat it IMHO.

talk about cheap mic's.had a friend who owned a FM in Kingsville TX.made his mic with a empty toilet paper spool and a condenser mic element from radio shack..and a battery.used with a valley 401 processor.could not believe how great it sounded.now that is cheap....

That is cheap! we used the same elements in the studio for triggering drums from a live kit.

Of course had to use pads and an outboard parametric eq as to help prevent false triggers.

I also read about where you could get a Sennheiser E835 damn close to an RE-20 using a little processing. But the more I'm testing this Equation Audio piece the more I'm liking it. I'm hearing that Linda Ronstadt, Poison, Motley Crue and Grand Funk are using it on tour and they love it.

Also a guy who is probably Pittsburgh's biggest V/O guy dumped a Behringer condensor and is using it.

We have a couple of the PR-40's, as well as a few pr-20's. Love 'em!
Slowly like to replace the re-20/27's as budget and time permits..

Has anybody tried the Heil heritage mike that resembles the old shure Elvis mike? The old shures never sounded that great to me personally.

I'm using a PR-40 as a guest mic. in a small production studio with an RE-20 main. Both are unprocessed, but can be EQ-ed on the board. The two sound quite similar, but the PR-40 appears to have a modest presence enhancement in the frequency response. The PR-40 has a solid feel. Given the price, it seems to be an attractive alternative.

I wanted to add that I've now added Heil's very inexpensive ($125 street) PR-20 to the mix in this small studio, with excellent results. I believe this one uses the same element as Heil's more expensive Classic, Heritage and PR-30 mics. And, it sounds excellent, with a crisp up front sound, adequate low end, and little proximity effect. Off axis rejection is good. Two caveats: the $50 shock mount is just about required in a studio environment, and there is a slight tendency to poppiness when worked straight on. It makes an excellent guest mic, and it's replaced the PR-40 for that purpose. I'd certainly recommend this one for less critical applications including podcasting, webcasting and news on a budget.

At the suggestion of a friend, I installed PR-40's for on air and production.
I like the sound. Very articulate. Was able to turn down the EQ boost
on the mic processors. I do recommend the shock mount. Especially for
jocks that like to fiddle with the mic boom while doing a break.
I thought I had a p-popping problem compared to RE-20's.
But after I re-adjusted the mic processor for this mic, it went away.
Called Heil for info on a windscreen and guess who fielded the call?
Bob Heil himself! Nice to talk to the President of the company.
Real nice guy. I will buy Heil again.

Neither does this mic. Just picked it up from BGS and it is going back. The Heritage pops like mad and has a funky midrange and the bass is very clippy. NOT a good mic at all. My SM58 wipes the floor with it.

adding to comments posted by RadarII; the Equation Audio DS-V7 is on tour with Grand Funk Railroad, The Moody Blues, Poison, Linda Rondstadt and others that have heard them onstage. The Moody Blues replaced Shure Beta 87a, Senn E845s and E835 mics for the DS-V7 during rehearsals in South Bend, IN. They also replaced all Shure Beta drum mics and a Beyerdynamics M88 in the kick for the Equation Audio MTD.7.2 (7- piece) drum mic pack that has a full retail price of $299! The Equation MTD.104.SLF kick mic is as good as or better than an Audix D-6. Grand Funk uses all Equation mics except 2 Equitek E100s and wireless H/Hs now according to their FOH guy (posted in EquationAudio.com forum). I saw Poison in Chicago and they rocked. Rikki (drums), C.C. (voc) and Bobby Dall (voc) were using Equation DS-V7s. They sounded far better than Brett on a Shure wireless 58? H/H mic. Monitor guys have been talking about how Equation mics are great for IEMs as they require little to no channel strip EQ. Oh, a single knot of tie line trimmed or a piece of garden hose washer will fit under the DS-V7 switch cover that pops off to lock the switch on if you need to do that. A version without a switch is supposed to be released soon. Your right the DS-V7 blows away the SM-58 and a host of others for way less $$.

I wanted to mention that Heil's site has audio clips of the various mics available in the 'amateur radio' section, not the broadcast section, for some reason. The clips have the same general characteristics I've observed with the two Heils I'm using, namely the PR-20 and PR-40.

Even though I like the Heils, the grass is always greener, y'know? I do want to check out the DS-V7. I'm finding a minimum order of $100 (that would be 2) at the only online dealer I could find (Pro Audio Solutions). Can someone recommend a better source?
