Helicopter Coverage of the Mehserle Verdict

I noticed that while KTVU 2 has their own helicopter over the scene, KPIX 5, KGO 7, and KNTV 11 are all sharing the same helicopter feed. Does anyone know if this is common for competing stations to use the same feed, or is it just until the other stations can fuel up their own helicopters and launch? It seems like in Los Angeles at least, each station has their own helicopter to cover news.

Now it appears that KRON 4 has their own helicopter in downtown Oakland now. From what it stands now KTVU 2 and KRON 4 have their own helicopters there while KPIX 5, KGO 7, and KNTV 11 are still sharing the same feed.

Wait I thought KGO owns their own helicopter and call it sky7 HD. and KTVU and KRON share a helicopter. Either When did KGO agree to have KPIX and KNTV borrow sky7? Lets look back in 1989 During the Loma Prieta Quake the National Media had to borrow KGO's Helicopter to get pictures of the Cypress Freeway, Bay Bridge collapse and borrow KGO's Ground Shots of the Marina District on Fire.

When watching the coverage of downtown Oakland, I saw that KTVU's helicopter had a view of downtown Oakland that was different from KRON. They were zoomed in on different scenes and was they were live so I could tell KTVU and KRON weren't sharing the same helicopter. So as far as I can tell, KTVU and KRON have their own helicopters. KPIX, KGO, and KNTV all had the exact same image. I switched between those 3 channels and saw they were sharing the feed, with the picture from the helicopter being exactly the same on each channel. However on KGO they did have the SKY7HD logo in the frame.

KRON does not have its helicopter back. I was told that during the KRON Oakland reports they were using some of the KGO Sky7 shots during their telecast. News sharing is becoming popular these days with many stations in the big markets.

Hmmm.... I guess I didn't notice that it was the same shot.

I've heard the technology for those one-person jet-packs has improved immensely. Maybe in the future, KRON can afford to strap one of their VJs to a jet-pack and send him a few hundred feet up in the air to shoot some footage with his camcorder. ;D
