I've been gone from Nashville and Way-Fm since the summer of '95, but I now will return to Middle Tennessee in a 'Lease To Buy' arrangement.... The 'kid' will have his station in a nice DMA community and county of 82,000..... I should be in place by the end of October and work in the new format over a few weeks in November. From the banks of the Duck River, this bird will fly.... Wish me well! (910/WMRB will continue the current Urban Gospel format on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6 to noon, and the new format will roll out the rest of the week's programming).... "Skipper T." 8)
Congratulations to you! I bet you're happy. I know I was when I got my station. At the age of 3 my Grandpa gave me a pocket radio; my dad took me to see 1400 WJZM, in Clarksville, where my cousin, the late John Bailey was part owner. I would watch the D.J. through the glass window, and that's when I learned what a radio station was. I told my Dad at the age of 4 years old that I wanted a radio station, and of course, he told me when I grew up, we would buy one.
Well, he made that dream come true in 1994, as we worked from 1991 to 1994, trying to get WMRO-AM (the former WWGM-AM) on the air in Gallatin. We'll it's been 16 years of hard work to make it go and I've had my ups and downs with it, but I don't give up. My Dad passed away in February of 2007, and I will say I was lucky to have a father who lived up to his promise.
My personal advice to you is when you make decisions, it's o.k. to listen to others, but go with what you mind tells you, not your heart. The late Tommy King of the TAB gave me that advice in the beginning of operating WMRO.
I don't know too much about your station, what little I know is that it has catered to an urban audience in the past. Being that you have 2 other AM's and one FM to compete with, it's going to be tuff, but hang in there! Never let anybody bring down your moral. I've had WMRO for over 16 years, and at age 46, I'm still going.
Good luck to you, and I hope you do well!
