Hello everyone

I have an interesting idea, I have heard people say that Variety Hits is a good format a bad format and a ugly format LOL. I think it's the best thing to ever happen to radio, but lets all do something that I hope will be fun and interesting. Today is November 25th 2005 from today until Christmas Eve 12/24/05 I would like to keep this thread open for the coming month if possible so that the world can excersize the right to vote and make your voices and opinions heard. Below is how I propose we do the vote so that it is as fair as it can be. The questions we're voting on are as fallows "What is the potential staying powwer for the variety hits format?" and "How long do you think the format will be here, 2 years?, 3 years? or Here to stay for good?

1. I encourage everyone to write wether you work in radio or not, it dosent matter if you are in the radio industry as this is a vote for all people, average writes like me and yes even modorators can vote everyone can make thier voices heard.

2. Pleas only one vote per person/username

3. Voting will end at midnight (eastern time) on 12/24/05

4. Lastly everyone can write thier opinions free speech is what this is all about, but remember to please keep it civil and no mudslinging. Please make sure that after you have written your remarks you write only one of the fallowing responses (Yes) (No) or (Undecided) as well as (Only One of the specified year predictions I have written above) at the end of one month we can all count the votes.

"note to modorators" if you need to close the thread before 12/24/05 go ahead but please keep in mind what I am trying to do here. I have asked everyone to keep it civil and I don't know if such a thing has ever been done on radio-info before. I want this to be a fun and interesting vote for all, so come on lets make our voices heard :)

BTW I have a vote on the (Rock/Classic Rock) board, so don't hold back, go vote on the topic there as well.

I think Variety Hits is a good idea and can be altered to fit the market and demographics.

It may evolve into a format with live hosts/dj's.

I think it will be around. I have been out of radio for over five years.

I see it lasting in its current form for 2 years, max. By then almost everyone will be sick of hearing Neil Diamond into Guns & Roses...the writers will have run out of snarky liner ideas by then too.

I do see it potentially evolving into a late 70s-mid 90s era oldies format...broad enough to encompass the HITS of that era, but without the intentional trainwrecks.

I worked in the biz for almost 25 years...finally got a "real" job. Still do some p/t fill in.

That's exactly what I think will happen, and it even what a couple of them have started doing.

(In radio - in Variety Hits)

I think the general concept will be around for the long haul, but that it will eventually cease to be considered a separate format. We already have Spanish, country, urban, and CHR takes on the VH idea in addition to the original classic rock/AC version. Other stations that don't really qualify as VH have adopted some of the positioning and imaging.

Extremely narrow formats are a dinosaur. Satellite radio and Internet streams can do that much better than a terrestrial station could, and that's where people who are very interested in a specific subtype of music will go.

The stations that are still doing all-music 10 years from now (which will be fewer than today as more stations move towards local talk and information that non-terrestrial delivery methods can't do as well) will sound like VH.

As for the jock issue, which is the main reason people bash the format, many listeners don't care to hear mediocre air talent. Most jocks don't add much to the product and the ones who do will probably end up with their own shows on talk or full-service stations anyway. Unless someone's a great personality and can really sell the brand, they shouldn't really be on. Of course, when many stations dumped their former formats for VH or VH-ish things, they also dumped some talented people. IMO, that was a mistake. I think the format would be even stronger if each station had a local "face", but you don't need Joe or Jane Linercard on all the other airshifts.

YES vote

I agree with you on the whole "jocks" thing but I believe eventually personalities will be part of the Jack/VH format- just not the linercard type you accurately refer to.

A "yes" on the format. If it gets this many people talking about radio, it can't be a bad thing. Oh, and yes- it's also improved a lot of radio station's ratings (and quickly).
