Hi everybody, I'm John David and I'm a 21 year old college student from Ocean County, New Jersey who has been interested in listening to regular AM/FM radio for 4-5 years, instead of the streaming platforms that my generation normally uses such as Spotify. That's also part of the reason I discovered this website in 2021.
But my main point in commenting here is to say that the AM/FM radio stations I could receive from Morris County, New Jersey (which is the area I grew up in) were annoying to listen to in more ways than one. And it was because of their longer than normal commercial breaks (which lasted over 6 minutes in some cases, longer than anything I'm used to hearing from where I live now in Ocean County), or even the types of songs they played (which were and still are mostly CHR, "AC", or Hip Hop/Rap with almost NO 1950's, 60's or 70's oldies songs.
And the stations I'm talking about all broadcast from the same area, New York City (since Randolph is only 30 miles west of that city).
But this experience is also what started my interest in AM/FM radio since in order to avoid listening to those New York City stations, I often went outside in my backyard in Randolph and picked up weak FM signals (from WSUS/WNNJ in Sussex County, New Jersey or WSBG/WABT in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania) or weak AM signals (such as 900 CHML in Hamilton, Canada or WMTR from Morristown, New Jersey). And in my opinion, all four of these radio stations are better managed and are more worth listening to than ANYTHING from New York City (even though 3 out of four are NOT oldies formatted).
