Hello. Question From New Member

I've been reading Radio-Info for several years now but have never registered or
commented until now. Like many of you, I love radio and love to talk about it
with others. I've been working in this business for over 30 years including on
and off air service in four top 20 markets. I've lived in Seattle for more than
eleven of those years and am a P1 radio listener.

After all I've seen here, I'm not sure this board is for me though. It's not that
I have a thin skin or do not enjoy spirited, lively debate. But why are so many
who post here so petty? So dismissive of others? The condescending
attitude towards those with a different viewpoint reminds me so much of the
political dialogue that is tearing this country apart right now.

For that matter, why do so many who post here hide behind anonymous internet
handles? Would they be so rude to others on the board if they were having
these conversations face-to-face over lunch? I thought the reason folks come here
is because of what they have in common, not to alienate as many others as possible.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts, either on this thread, or at my email at
[email protected].

Thank you for reading and Happy New Year!

Amen to that, Bean. I used to post here regularly but it has become really tiresome. You know in advance that the so-called industry experts are going to reflexively put down anybody who doesn't follow the party line, and are very quick to point out just how stupid you are should you choose to disagree. And there are a few guys that vaguely remember a radio that probably never was, and never could be. The suits tend to forget that they are a public trust, and are given the opportunity to serve the public by having the temporary right to occupy a specific spot on the dial. The hippies tend to forget that the music wouldn't play if the bills didn't get paid. This is all probably normal and healthy, except for your stated issue- the pettiness. And, boy, are you right about that! Maybe you can be part of the solution? There are a few posters here with regularly interesting things to say. There are a couple of engineering types who have no axe to grind. There's a small market station owner who always has good insights. There's a guy doing the hard work of actually putting and keeping together an AM station in Shelton- if that doesn't prove you don't love radio I don't know what does! There's a cat out of Bothell who is trying to catch a distant signal every night- gotta love it.

I'll do my part. My real name is Scott Wooster and I love radio. I love it so much that I volunteer as the morning host on a bunch of nanowatt (well, ok, a bit more than that) LPFMs and translators in SW Washington. I spend time every night putting together and recording a show that runs the next morning- and my friends and I try to do local mentions when there is something local worth mentioning. I do not pretend to be as talented as the vast majority of folks on Seattle radio, but then again I don't get paid. My day job is at one of the larger marketing and technology companies in the area. I have no choice but to voice track- I have a kid to put through college. That kid was possibly conceived in the production studio of a radio station in Mt. Vernon in early 1989- you have to do something while dubbing Les Schwab spots! ;)

Please give some of these guys a chance- it's the quieter ones that are worth hearing it seems to me. And would love to have your regular input as well.

Good posts, both of you.

SRP-

I really don't care one way or the other who this guy is or purports to be. And you could not have better illustrated the whole point of his post (or my response) if you tried, unless you are being condescending on purpose as a matter of satire. If you answer IS satire, my hat is off to you.

165 views as of Noon on 12/31 - 4 responses ... Bean and IndigoCoyote, you have said it all, as best it can be said. This is no place for friendly discussion. This board has become the home of nothing but "**** fights".

Thanks for speaking up!

May I add that the Seattle radio industry has for the most part been quite friendly over the past few decades. Very little slamming (on-air) of competing stations, unlike many other Top15 markets in the U.S. So the antagonism that manifests itself on this thread is a bit unusual. Perhaps it is pent-up frustration. Perhaps it is just a few who are angry. Regardless, the Seattle thread of radio-info does not reflect actual broadcast waves. Kind of like Seattle in general, polite, maybe somewhat passive-aggressive, but an oddity in every sense.

Bean,

Not had the chance to hear your show to often, but I've been told in the past one of you lived here in Seattle. "Kevin and Bean Show"?
The airchecks I've heard are you two getting very edgy, kinda like the
men's room here in Seattle

Been in the biz myself over 30 years and unlike some of my other radio
brothers and sisters enjoy checking out this board.(I think they like to say they don't pay attention, but are in the closet readers) You're right, it gets a little edgy at times but from what I see, the participants keep coming back.
Hate to say it, but the point counter point is what brings me back, besides being able to keep right up to date with whats going on in my market.
I like the mix of radio hobbyist and sharpend pro's that post on the Seattle board. I've checked out many of the others, and this one
seems to have more active on and off air talent posting.

What I'd like read more of is the sales perspective that we used to get from DJ Dan and a couple of others.

KJR, Klick, KVI, recent air talent departing (Bob Rivers, Ichabod, ect.),
a major signal in limbo, and the x-mas music flipping has really shaken up this market, this radio board and will continue to do so in the near future.

Happy New Year!!

BTW: Do you do your LA show from here? I know Delilah does her national show from here, pretty sure Brian Suits does his KFI weekend
show and fill in from his home or a studio here.

Do you REALLY believe this is "Bean" of the "Kevin & Bean" show?

Hard to know for certain (I could be Jean Enersen for all you know), but Bean has been doing his half of his show from Seattle for somewhere close to a decade now.

Been in radio 25 years on the management side of things and just recently started posting here from time to time. I have found that anonymous posts allow for a more lively discussion. Sure some abuse that, but it also allows radio insiders to vent without fear or retribution. There was a time when people "outed" others on this board. I noticed all that happened was some of the reasoned pros, quit posting. Those outside the business or on the fringes continued to post away. In the end forums are about content and you can quickly judge who knows what they are talking about. I may be in the minority, but I find the Seattle board one of the more interesting, despite the taunting. If you are Bean, please weigh in from time to time. Outside views can often stimulate discussion.

Happy New Year all!

Boy, did you two get duped. Clearly you missed this part of the OP:

Yes, this post definitely said it better than I could. In the time it took to call two other readers gullible (oddly, for taking something at face value that was quite plausible) he could have clicked on my email and asked me directly if I had posted.

I appreciate seeing the responses to my post and some good points were made. I have a lot of friends in Seattle radio and know they would be far more likely to contribute to a board like this if the conversation were respectful and not just a mob with pitchforks. But that's up to them to decide.

Since it's been brought up, I have lived in Seattle and been working from my home studio to do my show since June 1999, so 11 1/2 years now. I've worked in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco and while they were all fascinating radio markets, this is my favorite city I have ever lived in.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year filled with enjoyment and employment.

bean: this board is the only forum ive ever posted on about anything. sure there is disagreements, and jabs thrown. or spirited discussions, as the college educated, proffesional corporate media types like to put it. good!!! its been said the first thing i reached for after i got borned in late 1964, was the radio dial. not true, it was around 1970, and ive been tuned in since. i count myself as a listener, and critic first, but was able to talk myself into a couple "on air" radio jobs in the 90's, playing my fav's, bluegrass, and country. did a kick ass job, and learned a lot being on air, and operating the board. pretty much hit a dead end format wise in this neck of the woods, for what i know how to do best with my knowledge. play real country!

lets not be so sensitive you all...this is one great forum. we all love radio, and want the best for it. aint been no F bombs, or threats posted. you ever read some of them political sights? what we have here is an interesting cast of characters, who speak their mind. some of those involved in the public media, are probably smart to use a CB handle, otherwise they may get terminated for speaking their mind.

hats off to a few of the regular posters: bill wolfenberger, for learning me up on what this ppm ratings stuff is all about recently...a croc of nonsense. bongwater, my fellow corporate radio basher...dont know how you could listen to that 1230 AM korean format but, each to his own. little boy blue, my Canadian friend, who knows who and what i'm talkin about when ever i mention anything about Canada radio. SRP, who posts regularly, and obviously aint been castrated by the politically correct. guru, who disagrees with everything i say, including the time of the clock on the wall....guru, if your ever in seattle, for one of your corporate gatherings of the broadcasting corporate elite, e-mail me and ill buy you a drink, and lunch. i can debate this programming stuff til the cows come home!

by the way mr bean, aka rowan atkinson, i love all them short BBC comedy skits you done in the 90's. about as good as the three stooges, and marx brothers.

Mr Bean,

Now that you're here you'll have to chime in with your thoughts about the big radio company hatchet coming down on personality radio,
it most likely will help you and the Guru to get to know each other better.

Here in Seattle this past year or so:

Bob Rivers and crew
Icahbod Cane
T-man
Jim Dai (maybe last year)
I know there's more!
Night guy and PD Jay Kelly
Marty Riemer about a 1 1/2 ago.

Most likely missing more.

Has the PPM changed your show in LA?

Glad you're on board!!

Bean -

What you view as "sniping" and tearing each other down is, unfortunately, actually more commonplace than you know in the radio biz.

I contend that because of your status in radio and what you've been able to achieve that you are somewhat insulated thus able to side step the fray that commonly occurs in our business. Some of that manifests itself here.

Though I won't call anyone out on this board in particular, I will say it has its fair share of chronic whiners and, in some cases, downright haters. I personally come here to keep apprised of radio happenings in our community. But you seem surprised that this kind of thing actually exists in our business. That's the part that made me chuckle a bit.

I almost want to live in your world. Not for your paycheck, mine ain't too bad, but I "get to" see the reality of the business everyday and sometimes it ain't pretty.

Boards of this nature lend themselves to spirited debates and in some cases downright verbal beat downs... Why a few do tend to weigh in on the petty side, the majority simply voice their opinions and let the chips fall where they may...

At the end of the day I seriously doubt anyone on here has any malice towards their fellow posters and most simply agree to disagree and walk away and come back to do it all over again tomorrow.

Sorry, "bean9", I'm not buying it. First of all there's no DEFINITIVE PROOF you are who you say you are. Anybody can post someone's e-mail address and say it's their own.

But let's say for discussion that you ARE "Bean" from KROQ. I can't believe for a minute that you are THAT naïve about how conversations on the Internet take place. Seriously.

Exactly.

Reading this post by Bean (not Mr. Bean) made me finally stop lurking on this site and start getting involved a little bit. I too am doing a radio show from my home that is heard in Los Angeles, albeit a little weekend show on KFWB, (www.carnewsradio.com) but a show none the less. I am also doing a daily online show as well. (www.drs.fm) from my home studio.

I really like this board and I wish we could be more open about who we are and where we work, but, I guess that is the nature of the beast that is an online forum.

That's all, I feel better now. Happy New Year!

BTW, I am conducting a poll: do you use TWO THOUSAND ELEVEN or TWENTY ELEVEN?

I'm not sure why you think I'm naive or thought I was in any way surprised by the tone that internet posters like you take. NOTHING I said in either post suggested that at all so you just made that up. I was just asking why you are the way you are and I guess the answer is, "you're human" and that comes in many different flavors.

To end this boring topic (and your speculation,) in the time it took you to post your latest volley, you could have clicked on my email address ([email protected] if you've forgotten) and just asked whether I'm posting here or not.

Onward and upward, and congratulations to my friend Bob Rivers, truly one of the best in the business.
