Help me understand KTFM PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello radio world,

I will like to understand KTFM please. I 30 years of age so I could remember The old KTFM. I listen to the new KTFM and i cant relate! I mean some of the songs i do relate with but others are way out there. The old KTFM was programed for a Hispanic female. The New KTFM is programmed for who? Who do the target? and one last question. Why on earth do the play SO MANY RECURRENTS ? Thats all they play with the exception of some had full of pop records!!! It makes the station sound old, outdated and a has been! One more thing. This is not an attack on the air talent on KTFM. I'M JUST TALKING ABOUT PROGRAMING!.............

Thanks for your time

It is really kinda simple.

Old KTFM started to get hella sloppy. (That happenes when you dont have competition) and played what was popular at the time (pre-beat). Unfortuneatly for them at the time NSync, Backstreet Boys, Brittney Spears were all on top of their game. And being how that was what was popular, thats what KTFM played. People grew tired and pist. Seems as if the Beat came in at the pefect of times. People abaondoned KTFM overnight. So Infinity Broadcasting paniced and flipped its image of KTFM several times with a year. (NOT GOOD) That only gave listeners yet another reason to switch away (and they did). Finally Infinity had enough and pulled the plug and flipped. So long.

BMP later picked up the calls and for a short time there... didnt use the old image of KTFM, only the calls. That soon changed and even adopted old KTFMs logo. (Saw that coming a mile away)

Fast forward to NEW KTFM. Everyone hears the stories about how much BMP penny pinches. A lot of people on here say this and say that about the airstaff on new KTFM but hey.... with a company who penny pinches what else do you expect??? New KTFM is just an attempt to recapture the old greatness of its former self. (no chance) San Antonio is a punchbowl of lame people. Non fickle people who wanna hang onto the past for some reason.

But if you want a straight answer here is my response: Todays KTFM is taylored towards women who still wanna taste of the old KTFM and a tad of the new music at the same time.

Some people like it and some people think they should start handing out barf bags.

Man....I need a barf bag so bad !!!!!!!!!!!! To me its very lame. I feel bad for the guy doing the music everyday. looking at those lame songs. Give that man a raise. Look, to me the bad decisions of the old KTFM made the Beat the monster that it is today. All those women that listened to the old KTFM are getting to hit their 40th birthday. Targeting 40 year old women to me is bad radio. They do not listen to music anymore. They listen to talk radio. To me the new KTFM is a lame copy cat of a mixture of Mix 96.1 with crapy 90's and 80's music. Oh by the way FREESTYLE music is dead!!!!!!!!! let it rest along with Selena!!!

First off, KTFM is Rhythmic AC and not a Top 40 station. The target demo is Hispanic females.

Rhythmic Adult Contemporary is a format used on stations in the United States and Canada, similar to rhythmic top 40 radio. Like many adult contemporary radio stations, Rhythmic AC stations often would not play rap. It usually gears toward an older audience, ages 25 to 54. Often stations using this format play a great deal of disco from the 1970s and early 1980s, dance/pop music, dance/ freestyle of the 1980s and house music of the late 80's/early 1990s.

Btw, I am glad KTFM didn't go Top 40 or Hip Hop. I think we have those bases covered by other stations in town.

I agree with you about them not doing more hip hop. This market cant support 3 hip hop stations. Are you talking about some sort of a "MOVIN" format like they have in Seattle and Chicago? Also, I with many others gave Hip Hop a short run but come to find out its here to stay at least in this market. With that said, My opinion is to go to an older demo is a good idea but the way they are doing it is just so lame. They do live broadcast from a club like a top 40 station but they target 40 year old women??? Those 40 year old are in bed by the time the start the live broadcast!!!! The approach is all wrong. KTFM call letters mean nothing, just a long dead deam. The top 40 they play is not even top 40!!! they are playing top 40 from like 3 years ago???
Thats wack to me!! If you are going to play current music play all current music.Don't beat people over the head with that old lame Justin Timberlake and Sean Paul records. maybe if Im lucky I will hear Forever by Chris brown(that by the way was a stiff). To them a current song is a re current to the general public.Thats the big ass problem that KTFM has.!!!

I couldnt agree more. FREESTYLE is just as horrible as RegGAYtone

But I have said in my earlier post that people in San Antonio arent fickle and will die listening to the same ol caca for decades. That would suck to be so one dimensional.

Targeting 40 year old women to me is bad radio. They do not listen to music anymore.

Agree with you again

40 year old women dont listen to music....?????

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

They do buy stuff lots of stuff probably more stuff than 18 year olds...

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Tell this to Roger Allen over at KONO and he will spit his hot coffee all in your FACE!
Same thing For Virgil T over at Magic
Ditto for the PD at KQ.

Now I know your problem...

I may not like a lot of what these stations do nor KTFM in some ways. But a 40 year old female is still in the prime target demo
25-54.

and I like music considered way too young for me...

Just a horrible statement.

You kids get your laughs in before school starts in 2 weeks...

Okay I can see how that was taken out of context. Most people in their cars listen to music but the older crowd arent there lying in bed everynight writting letters to their BFF while they listen.

It is ignorant to say they dont listen to radio at all. I dont think thats what RADIO KING meant.

I'm so glad I left San Antonio. So lame. Ok in small doses of road trips to visit friends and families but I enjoy Houston much better. The radio isn't any better but the low end of the dial is more promising. Now back to complaining about no active rock in Houston.

wow. I did not know that name dropping was cool again. By the way throwdown....KONO DOES NOT TARGET WOMEN. do your research before you throw name bombs!

Most females that grew up in San Antonio back in the 80's and 90's were probably listening to KTFM. And back in the day Freestyle ruled the airwaves whether you were a fan or not. While I'll agree KTFM can do somethings better, it's not a bad station.

I'm with you on this one. I think during evening and night hours the playlist should open up a little more.

KTFM does play current music from Ne-Yo-Closer, Rihanna-Disturbia, Secondhand Serenade-Fall For You and others. But then again, why do you want KTFM to play all currents? If you want currents then perhaps you tune to Mix 96.1 where all the currents are played. What KTFM does is limit the spins of current artist which is great. Mix 96 has a couple of artist played every hour. Yes folks....EVERY HOUR. Check how many spins Mix 96 plays Jesse McCartney-Leavin.

So am I. Now get on with your day!!

I very rarely make an appearance on these boards but every once in a while it's interesting to check out the opinions expressed here...

It seems like light years ago but I can say I was there during both the reign and the fall of KTFM. Although there are nuggets of truth to what the majority of what's posted here ...unless you were in on the "war room discussions" you really don't know the full story. I was on the air during the years leading up to the introduction of the Beat as well as being recruited by the first PD of the Beat JD. I feel great knowing that some of my closest friends in radio have gone on to do wonderful things at the Beat but the fall wasn't that in the beginning the format of the Beat was so great, because in reality it was one of the weakest in terms of the genre... if you peel back all the smaller contributing factors, it all comes down to this...

instead of KTFM doing KTFM...the powers that be blinked...panic set in and didn't make the beat earn what they got by making them do great radio. True KTFM's music roster was tweaked over years of being number one and seemingly the leadership as well as the staff was very indecisive in how to present itself to the public...

Since KTFM was a true heritage station what we should have done was stuck to our guns knowing that generations had grown up listening to us, therfore there was something to work with. we knew eventually the younger demos were going to head to the Beat at some point, but we should have figured out that eventually they would grow right back into our demos. and along the way they were going to flip between what they knew and thier peers were listening to.

It was a very strange existence during those months... I (along with other airstaff) could feel the management didn't take JD and Co. very serious and when they realized what they were up against... it was like the perfect storm had hit and quite frankly ...they weren't prepared for what followed...

I have since moved on and am doing Network TV and Radio...For all the unique challenges that come with understanding the San Antonio market...I will say that it is what it is...it made me look at Radio in a whole different light...

I am glad that M3 is making a go of it at KTFM and I am proud of the job Xavier, Cindy (although she has since moved on) my man AK , Valencia and those I have had the fun experience of KTFM, the Beat and the former 106.7 Jamz( nowPower106) family.

I hope those who take the time to read this at least consider the other nuances that came into play during that strange but true time at the end of the Dynasty know as the Original KTFM

Derriqmaq. (DMAQ)

My man DMAQ..... I have been trying to hunt you down all this years. This is your boy......I ll give you a hint... wile on air I played that dance record that way produce by a local artist DJ rice. The record was a house track.I would burn you songs to put them on air.I always loved house more than any other Dance music. I think by now you know who this is. Hit me up man

P. S. Are you still twisting the hair?

I agree with what DMAQ had to say. I was also there when all this went down. DMAQ and I were part of the party patrol and all the weekend night shows. I produced all of his night shows and went out on remotes with him so did big mike. I also moved on. I am an audio engineer for a national tv and radio ministry, I am also an up and comming music producer. I have alot of respect to everyones opinion on these boards but if you were not there when everything went down then you are just speculating what happened. There are some people who do not like KTFM but the facts are facts it was a dominate station at that time. That is what the beat is for now. Peace to all my friends that are still in the radio biz.

He is doing fine. He is working with me. Homeboy has 2 kids a little boy and one on the way. Larry has been busy if you know what I mean. He is trying to start a consulting buisness too. I also forgot to mention that I have a small production buisness, the name is Fuzion Pro Studios. DMAQ and I are also looking to put another show on the internet called All Saints Radio. It is a christian hip hop show. We were on the air locally for a year, the problem was that we had a weak signal and the wrong demo but it was free air time. We will see what happens next. Peace.

to be at KTFM during the downfall....

there is truth to what was said by dmaq and benny in that you just had to be there.

I was there, it was fun...now let it be!

radio evolves and moves on..its a shame that in this industry all some of you have to say is..

"but i worked at ktfm!" or " remember ktfm"

worked = past tense....

with few exceptions....everyone that was a former staffer at ktfm landed on their feet.

Many are doing well at Univision, Bmp, Cox , and other markets!

The sad part is that as much as those of you hate on the old ktfm - there is probably a reason you were not there. NO TALENT or NO PASSION.
At KTFM you learned to be a jock, mixer, board op, weekender, promotions asst, programmer. you were given the ability to take your ideas and present them to management....IF YOU WERE HOT - YOU WERE HOT! no matter your position you helped define SA radio and made others raise the bar.
Many of you would have traded your kids to run the board at the once legendary station, but didnt have a way in.

All that being said its a shame in that so many years later all that is left to post about is KTFM.

kinda reminds me of that old phrase -

JOCKED BY MANY, HATED BY PLENTY-- RESPECTED BY ALL!

Man. I hate to drop name bombs like thowdown in the previous post but I feel its time. KTFM now is and will never be what KTFM was in the 90's.Thats the truth.I was there too and the guys that gave me my shot was Steve Chavez and his bother. Love those guys. Steve got screwed and we all know that.Thats the truth. How one bad move brought that station down!!! When they brought that other PD(forgot his name) the station just feel.Cindy hill was still there at the time but did not have enough say so to make differance. Look at Cindy now. Bad decisions back to back to back took that station from #1 to the SH*t hole!
