HELP: SONG TAGGING ON B & NOW

Can someone explain to me what the point of the song tagging is? I mean it's cool and all to hear what the name of the song and artist is, but it is REALLY annoying. Don't most people who probably listen to these formats have RDS on their car stereo? I just dont understand the point behind song tagging.

I'm the only person in my extended family with RDS on a car radio, so I'm not really sure how widespread it is yet (or how many people who have it care enough to look at it while driving). That aside, though, the bigger impact may be about in-office listening--where RDS is not that common, and one would guess people listening online don't keep the player window visible on their screen.

I'm neutral on the tags--don't find them annoying, wouldn't miss them if they were gone.

Song tagging also makes management think live jocks aren't necessary. And the reality these days is that for an office-listening station like Now 97.5, they probably aren't!

They aren't necessary in all cases. Ben has no tags and does well enough with nothing but a morning show (well, and a midday show for a while, but that appears to be on hold while she's a new mom).

Thus far, B101's RDS does not display song title and artist, whereas NOW 97.5 and many other stations do. B101's RDS display is just a static "B101" display.

B did some research with the listening audience and the research came back that listeners wanted it. Its a very common complaint that I hear all the time from people that listen to stations. They want to know who the artist and songs are. In B's case most of their songs are a few years old and people might remember hearing the song but they forget the artist and title. I dont know if they are getting involved with this microsoft project with song tagging, but it could help them make a few dollars in the end

Is it just me or does anyone else think that song-tagging on a station that plays mostly old music is stupid? Don't most listeners to those stations listen because they ALREADY know the songs? If anything, the stations that play currents and new music are the ones that should be tagging. It is VERY annoying to have to search online for hours to find song info, when all it takes is a few seconds to ID a song.

Or better yet, a live person with a personality could take a few seconds to tell you the title & artist...and maybe even say something else, something newsworthy or interesting which the target audience can relate to. That would be pretty neat.
