A few weeks ago, "The French Connection" was on television and this girl group was singing, "Everybody's Goin' to the Moon" or something like it; any help would be appreciated. Was this a _real band, I didn't see the credits at the end of the movie.

IMDB.com lists it as "Everybody Gets to Go to the Moon" by the Three Degrees.

Actually, the name of the song is "Everyone's Gone To The Moon". It was a Jonathan King hit, sort of, in about 1965. Chad & Jeremy also sang it and I believe they wrote it, too. The Jonathan King version, as I recall, got more airplay and charted a bit higher.

It's still a nice and mellow piece of music to this day. Grab your guitar:

EVERYONES GONE TO THE MOON

D Bm7 G A7
Streets full of people …all alone …

D Bm7 G A7
Roads full of houses …never home …

D Bm7 G A7
Church full of singing … out of tune …

G F#m7 D A7
Everyones gone … to the moon …

D Bm7 G A7
Eyes full of sorrow …never awake …

D Bm7 G A7
Arms full of money … all in debt …

D Bm7 G A7
Sun coming out … in the middle … of June …

G F#m7 D A7
Everyones gone … to the moon …

G A7 D Bm7
Long time ago … life had begun …

G F#m7 D A7
Everyone went … to the sun …

D Bm7 G A7
Hearts full of mountains …painted green …

D Bm7 G A7
Mouthes full of chocolate …covered cream …

D Bm7 G A7
Arms that can hold me … lift a spoon …

G F#m7 D A7
Everyones gone … to the moon …

G F#m7 D A7
Everyones gone … to the moon …

G F#m7 D A7
Everyones gone … to the moon …

CHORUS G AND F#m7 are bar chordes

Song by Chad and Jeremy

The song was played on WABC in November, 1965 by Dan Ingram as the lights flickered. He then played an instrumental to go into a newsbreak and then during the first few minutes of the news the power completely went off and the station died.

I had a friend in NJ who was not affected and turned on the radio to 77 and got WJW-Detroit (760-AM). He told me that he knew something was up.

I don't know if anyone else ever recorded it--strange as it was, I wouldn't be surprised if Jonathan King was the only one. Writing credits go to Kenneth King. The song reached #17 in 1965.

Jonathan King was said to have recorded the first version of Hooked On A Feeling with the "oooga chucka" and named the groups Genesis (produced their first album too) and 10CC. He also produced the Bay City Rollers' 1st British hit. King recorded "Gloria" in 1979, 3 years before Laura Branigan's big hit version!

Jonathan King later did a talk show on WMCA in New York City, and a few years ago was arrested and served time in prison for indecent & sexual assaults on teenaged boys.

Re: Help with a song. One More Useless Fact

On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first walk on the moon (1994), KOMA in Oklahoma City had a weekend where every time they played Everyone's Gone To The Moon they gave away some prize to a caller and entered the caller in a grand prize, which I do not remember, but I don't think it was a free trip to the moon.

The song has been rattling around in my head for the past two weeks, luckily it's a pleasant song. You certainly know your oldies, thanks to everyone who responded. Try and stay cool this week.
