HELP WITH COOL EDIT

Hi,

For uears we've used SAW by IQS Software. We just changed to Cool Edit and for the most part like it! However, we were told that we could make any voice come to life and sound like a million dollars with all the EQ and processing. We've played with it ten thousand times and can't get it right. Could someone please tell us how to do this? We want our material to sound rich and full! Thank you so much!

Your Mic isn't running through any kind of processor then, it's just flat going into the board? Try using the graphic equalizer settings. You can sweeten them to your own preferences by tweaking the individual frequencies. For me a standard "bell curve" usually works best. Good luck.
 
Depending on the mic (AKG mic..is pretty general..they do make some klunkers) I can give you a great starting EQ for broadcast production. Bear with me here..

Radio and TV transmitters will try to faithfully reproduce darn near ANY frequency you throw at them..but whatever they are asked to reproduce requires energy, and there is a finite amount of electrical energy available so as producers and voice talents we should try to accentuate the freqs that are most benificial to create clarity and loudness. Too many lows will make the track sound flat or downright muddy...and NOT loud..it won't cut through. And too many highs (over 10K) will make for splashiness, and lots of unwanted mouth noises (saliva, tougue clicks etc)

That said..draw a straight line on a piece of paper and imagine 20hz at the extreme left, and 20KHZ as the extreme right.

Make a 3db boost at around 80HZ...a 1db boost at 200HZ..and leave it FLAT until 1.5KHZ..there, give it a 3DB boost...flat again until 4KHZ..and give it 2DB boost..then at 8KHZ give it a nice 4db Boost, and at 10KHZ a small 2DB boost.

Here's the secret..from 60HZ and lower..CUT gain so that there's like a -10DB CUT at 20HZ..and do the same from anything over 12KHZ bring it down to -10DB to get rid of noise.

Adobe Audition, Cool Edit and other EQ sections can split the freqs up so that you can do this.

salt and pepper to taste and serve with a dry sherry.
