Help with Orban 6200DAB

I have a FM translator and the transmitter has a built in stereo generator. Can I use a Orban 6200 DAB as the main audio processor? I do not have money for a new processor. We paid about 5,000 when this processor was new.

The 6200DAB is not tuned for FM but it can be used as pre-processor at the studio. You can easily find at eBay a used Optimod 8000, 8100 or 8200.

Because you have a stereo generator available, you could also use an 8180, 8182 or 8282 Optimod-TV, all of which provide the preemphasis processing required for protecting an FM transmission. These TV processors are sometimes available used for less cost than used Optimod-FMs.

I have a stereo encoder Orban Optimod 8218 which has pre-emphasis and 15KHz filter. Why i can't use Orban 6200DAB?

IIRC the 8218 does not have a pre-emphasis limiter. If will handle overshoots on a pre-emphasised processed signal but it is not suitable for using after a 6200 DAB.

The best you can hope for a 6200 is as an AGC or pre-processor to a basic transmission limiter that includes pre-emphasis. If your transmitter has a built in audio limiter then it may be ok.

You could probably sell the 6200 on ebay and get enough money to buy a digital processor with built in pre-emphasis limiting anyway. Possibly even one with a built in stereo generator.

I've not tried this but it may be possible to make it work. You will have to use the 6200's band 5 compressor as a high-frequency limiter and use the overshoot compensator in the 8218 as a clipper (a task for which it is not designed). You will get noticeably better results from a processor designed specifically with pre-emphasis limiting in mind.

The 6200 *does* have a sharp lowpass filter available and this can be set for 15 kHz. (The control is called MAX LPF and is in System Setup; see step 2 under System Setup in Part 2 of the 6200 Operating Manual.) In this application, it is very important to do this.
