Hendrie on KLSX

Found this on Youtube:

Smoking in the studio and playing songs most of which wouldn't be on any classic rock station today. Before the voices and fame, Hendrie wasn't a bad jock at all.

Not bad at all. He's a really talented communicator and even in this early clip you can see some of his theatrical abilities coming through on air. I love his smooth, Southern California voice and accent. Thanks for sharing!

Somewhat related, last week YouTube's algorithm gave me this clip below from about a year ago when Phil joined Tim Conway Jr. in studio. I really enjoyed the interview where they discuss some of his radio history and the origin of some characters such as Bobbie Dooley. Michael Crozier, who is Conway's news anchor previously worked with Hendrie (I think when he was at KFI in the late 90s and early 2000s) and joined in a bit as well.

Hendrie has a great voice and a smooth delivery. But he HATED being a jock. I saw an interview with him in the 90s where he said he hated talk radio, too...but unlike music radio, it was a format where he could satirize it for an entire show.

As great as his KFI stuff was, my favorite bit of his was from WIOD in Miami. Can't find a streamable copy of it, or I'd post it, but basically, he goes on the air and underneath him very low, there's a tape running of him just saying "you son of a bitch" over and over and over.

Phil acts like nothing's wrong, sets up what would be a typical talk show format, and then, after about four minutes, an old lady calls to complain that someone is saying bad words on the show.

Phil feigns ignorance, puts her on hold (Paul Anka's "Having My Baby" is the hold music) and then comes back on the line as WIOD's engineer, who "helps" the lady find the source of the interference----going so far as instructing her on how to disassemble the drain of her bathroom sink.

The bit was at least ten minutes, maybe fifteen. Absolute genius.
