Henson's 2/26 show summary & a question

During today's three-hour show Henson received three (3) telephone calls. And that includes one call from an obviously distured person. (Add punch-line here: ___________).

Henson didn't receive one call during the 6 pm hour.

Here's my question: Is this something that would trouble a PD or station owner, an afternoon drive-time guy who averages one call per hour? (Less than that if you count sane callers only.) How telling is this of the size of the audience? Are the two directly related?

Gatsby,

As someone who did that shift before Robert, I can tell you that the 6 pm hour is tough. I averaged 3-4 calls during this time, in contrast to 6-8 or more during the 5 pm slot. (I kept a record of this, always trying to entice more people to call in.) With no discernable PD, the station is a rudderless ship. I’ll bet their lack of focus is really costing them listeners, hence Robert getting fewer calls.

To the best of my knowledge, WCOJ has never done anything to promote any local show. "If you build it, they will come," is only true in fantasy movies. Any show, local or national, must be heavily promoted to be successful. That's why we get treated to Michael Smerconish's picture on all those busses (I wonder if he gets a good seat?) A heritage 50,000 watt clear channel signal doesn’t mean squat without the right advertising and marketing.

Now that WCOJ appears to be really cutting back, I'm sure there is no chance of any kind of promotion. Give the guy a break. You do seem to obsess about his show. There are lots of really crappy Philly area shows with which you could have some real fun. Robert's just like the rest of us, trying to earn a living. And, unlike many on this board, he is doing it in radio.

Thanks, that's very good information to know. I think you are right on, in that show prep and keeping things local is key. I think Henson tries to do this, but people just don't find him engaging. I think my friend (who, unlike me, makes a living in radio) said it best when he noted that "for some reason, most people just don't like the guy".

I know all about Henson because, after 10:00 am on most weekdays, WCOJ is on in my office. And it's on almost all weekend in my home. (I really enjoy listening to AM radio while I work, and when I'm just hanging.) I know just as much about Ron's Swap Shop, the Dave Ramsey Show, Circling the Square, Wow! Phoenixville, Health Focus, Computer Corner, the Lincoln Radio Journal, and every other show on this station. I really like WCOJ, and I want to see it do well. But I think Henson is a very weak link. Replace him with someone better, and build around that person.

Nice board Y'all.

Yo Gatsby, what, no love for our show?

Hey Steve Bryant, you have mail from Westwood sitting in the WCOJ studio.

Joe Harnett Rules!!! ;D

I listen to your show every Saturday. Last Saturday your guest was a former S.F. 49er, who now owns a gym in the area, correct? It was a good show, as always.

Wow, an entire thread about a rimshot AM station getting 3 phone calls.

I officially don't give a rat's ass about this station anymore.
