Herald: Big Dough for Big O (WEEI, may include TV)

This proves that there is money and employment for those deserving of it. I guess they see Ordway as a radio rainmaker...in the same way that Larry Johnson and Craig Mustard aren't.

I guess the money is in aft drive and The Big Show has often led its time slot. I usually listen to Howie
instead, but sometimes tune in. People complain online, etc. about all the yelling but people must be
listening. So the money gets thrown at Big O while Mustard and Relish, er, Johnson are out in the cold..?

As "good" as the Big Show is (apparantly), it is hard to believe that he is worth THAT much...same is true with Dennis and Callahan IMHO and they are paid about half of Ordway I think. However I would opine that Ordway has a good face for RADIO...do we really want to see him fill the screen...remembering that line from Friends..."the camera adds 15 lbs"..."How many cameras do you have on you?"
The world is just such a strange place.

Did anyone have any serious doubts that the Big-O and Entercom WOULDN'T work out a deal.

No though some were speculating that the longer it went on, the LESS he'd eventually get in
the contract. Scott's Shots at Boston Sports Media Watch felt he was losing leverage. To paraphrase
Mo Vaughn (and switch it around), the price goes DOWN every day. But I guess not! If he left
there was always the chance of 104.1 FM Sports or Sports 92.9, and I understand all but Sheppard
of his pals didn't have a contract so he could bring them along...though admittedly a very very
low chance of it happening, especially given the financial climate of radio these days (CBS, Greater)
but he was a cash cow for EEI

This is the first Good News story I have seen in the business in a long time. God Bless O.... I can remember when he slept in his car in Winter Haven to cover to Sox Spring Training. I had to beg my GM in my first paying gig ever (WPEP in Taunton) to cough up the $14.00 per week to carry Glen's reports (1975). When Johnny (Most) died and Glen got the Celtics gig I felt almost like a proud parent. More power to him, I hope he gets ALL their dough :) !!!

Just be happy he didn't pull that 'indentured servant' crap like another fat afternoon host down the hall...

I've been gone for almost 3 years. Nice to be remembered ;D

the first sign he's good ?
People claim they hate him. Hate is an emotion. You don't hate, what you don't care about.
if you can get people to have a strong, visceral reaction to you, money and ratings follow.

It is awesome to see that there are still great salaries to be made if you work hard.

And BTW...let's not forget, Howie's not exactly making minimum wage.

>>You don't hate, what you don't care about.

As I've always said:

"I just want to let you know I think you're stupid and what you're saying shouldn't be on the air!"
"All right caller, just tell me, how often do you listen?"
"every day..."

Ordway gets a pile of money while others in town are unceremoniously fired in cost-cutting measures at competing stations. To me, this speaks volumes about how low we have sunk as a society, when a loud obnoxious blowbag like Ordway can command a king's salary in a woeful economy by berating, insulting, condescending and hanging up on his customers- the listening audience. WEEI may very well stand astride the ratings books, but that says less about the quality of their product than the self esteem of their listeners. Masochists rejoice!! It seems the Big O will be berating and verbally abusing you for another couple of years.

I'm not into Howard Stern but he gets big bucks from XM-AreYourSirius because he has many fans (or at least Uncle Mel signed him for big bucks in that hope). I don't necessarily agree with Keith Olbermann but he got a huge contract because lots of people watch him. Those on the left are probably upset that Sean Hannity
still has a job, but he's one of the highest rated talk hosts around and thus got a big salary from it. The
same applies to Glenn Ordway, who was dubbed "The Big Zero" by now retired (or perhaps working at a
smaller paper) Herald columnist Jim Baker.

Is O'Reilly a blowhard? Yes. Do people tune in (TV show; he's giving up radio show)? You bet they do. Yes
it's regrettable that some talent has lost their jobs and I hope they get re-hired somewhere else, or by 'BZ
again, but it's a sign of the times that the big corporations like CBS (and Sirius, Fox, MSNBC, ABC-Citadel)
etc. feel their biggest performers get huge salaries. Unfortunately, they also believe that (perhaps to make
up for these salaries) the "little guys" in the equation, on overnights and weekends, are expendable. It's
not fair and I wish it weren't that way but it's how THEY feel. Big bucks for the big performers, and
cuts elsewhere.

I wish the economy were in better shape and the "loss leaders" of nights and weekends could still be there (that is,
I'd hope that the people in the main time slots make enough money to help finance live and local hosts
at time slots when fewer people listen), but the way things are, they _feel they_ need to make cuts (see WRKO
sacking the news staff while Howie and Glenn get big salaries). Again, would hope they could find it
in their budgets to employ the likes of Steve, Lovell, Tom, and Pat and maybe they will turn up
elsewhere (just like the former WRKO people like Listo, Mary Blake, Rod Fritz, et all, who did get a job
elsewhere).

And now back to WBZ's pre-recorded overnight newscasts. Boy that's great radio! Wish life were more fair.
And I'm not saying I agree with these decisions, I'm just saying this is how radio is these days. Hope it
changes!

>>if you can get people to have a strong, visceral reaction to you, money and ratings follow.

Notice how many people on Herald message board said they hate him/his show. Now look at the
ratings WEEI gets for that time slot (#1 for many years). Now you see why they brought him back,
and at that salary. Pay money to MAKE money. Lots of it. (Cue the Money Song by Monty Python:

Radio mirrors life...

Radio mirrors life, that's all. Just like the top 2% of the population gets 95% of the wealth, about 3% of the people who work in radio make a killing, while everyone else working in radio suffers thanks to them.

At WRKO/WEEI, the only people who make a killing are the talent, managers and a few senior salespersons. Everyone else gets screwed. Don't kid yourself, the board op for Ordway makes ten dollars an hour if he's lucky! I'm not singling them out either; it's the same at every other radio and TV station everywhere!

It used to not be quite that bad. Talent always made more then rank and file (aka: 'Below the line') employees, but the disparity was never like it is today. The main reason was due to unions. First the fools voted the unions out and then saw their salaries and job security go into the toilet. Frankly, they have no one to blame but themselves. Of course, the stations share the blame too. They made promises to their employees and then reneged (or worse-lied) on/to them.

I recently read that the disparity between the lowest paid employeee at a company and the highest averaged about 35-50 in the 1960s. Now it can be 500 or more.
With that kind of multiple, is there any question why the rich few do so well and the rest of us do so poorly? The irony is that these numbers bear fruit the MOST in sports, obviously including sports radio!

Question? Do you see ANY of the big brass at ANY broadcasting company cutting or freezing their pay during these trying times? NOPE! Yet, there are plenty of rank and file who have been forced to take a 100% pay cut-and many more will be joining them this year!

Greed is the main reason our country is so screwed today and whether you like it or not, greed will continue until the majority say ENOUGH! Want to know where tio start? SPORTS! Instead of paying a fortune to go to a game, watch it on TV or listen to it on the radio. Even better, read a book or do something with your children or grandchildren. The only way to make things better is to HIT THEM WHERE IT HURTS THE MOST-THEIR WALLET!

Missing a game won't ruin you like missing a meal or a doctor's appointment might. It's entertainment-nothing more.

WEEI is a portrait of mediocrity. But it's brand name mediocrity, so it will always get decent ratings. From the snobs in the morning to "Dale Denver" at night. If ESPN 890 seriously competed with WEEI in 05/06, then a dent could have been made...but not establishing a local morning show was a sign that they weren't serious. It's too bad..ESPN' national shows, while hardly great are FAR SUPERIOR to the dreck that Fox Sports provides.
