Herald: Finneran producer gets threats

I had a caller about 3 weeks ago who called and said they were cleaning off their gun and then said "you will die"...i asked them if they wanted a "threefer" of zeppelin and never heard back

As a radio personality you've got to take these threats very seriously. I had a nut job pop up at my studio window with a rifle in Washington, D.C.. I nearly stained my shorts! Fortunately for me he was looking for another jock at the station and left when he realized I was the wrong guy. He never did actually shoot anyone on our staff but I hate to think about what might have been.

Not just safety, but your sanity, too. I remember interning at Z-Rock near the Groton Navy Sub Base several years back. Yikes, the parade of nutjobs from the base that'd show up at our remotes and at the studios? (which were right down Rt.12 from the base entrance) You had to wonder why some of those guys were issued live ammo, much less were allowed on nuclear subs! I was warned on day one to never give a name that could be traced to an address lest these freaks show up at your home at 3am, drunk and demanding you play more Metallica. Supposedly that actually happened once to a former DJ, but admittedly it had the feeling of "urban legend" to it.

Still, I was never on-air and, more importantly, I'm a guy...I shudder to think what our two women DJ's (who were both quite attractive) had to put up with.

Don't you guys have caller-ID? Or should I assume everyone who makes that kind of threat is doing so from a throw-away phone?

Yeah, I would say you have to take ALL callers seriously that come across like this, & even ones that don't threaten. Maybe it would be wise for talk show hosts to "back off" a bit with the rude comments to callers & hiding behind the bleep button.

It is easy to mouth off when you are in a comfortable studio, but you gotta walk out that door sometime...

And what is up with eating food that listeners send in or bring to the studio? I would NEVER trust doing that!

station security

Back in the day, when I was doing college radio - the
station was located on the ground floor of one of the
engineering buildings. This little girl overnight DJ was saying, on the air,
that she was alone, and exactly where she was located. The then-PD
climbed through the open window and scared the living crap out
of her. Lesson learned! ;D

no caller id...would be helpful now that I think about it...I was also told once by a station pd that if a fire alarm happens in the building that you make sure we don't go off air and wait inside until somebody shows up....i told that person there was no way in hell you could pay me enough to make sure the next song played if there was a fire...I lasted 3 weeks at that station before I quit

About 14 years ago, before caller ID was common, I was working at a station and I kept getting calls from someone who was making (what seemed like) idle threats during my Friday night show. I got a call from the PD the next day telling me when I was to go in for my Saturday afternoon show to show up at a specific time as the police were going to be there to escort me in and escort the person who was on before me out. As it turns out, this guy had been calling EVERYONE at the station for a few days. They eventually caught him and he ended up doing some time.

So yes, there are some crazies out there...be careful!!

I worked for a station in Alabama about seven years ago that sent a listener to the on-air studio in the middle of my morning show without even asking why they wanted to see me. I mean, how crazy is that? Of course, I ended up marrying that listener. So, maybe that was a bad example. ;)

I'm surprised that we don't hear of more threats. Some of the nut cases that call Dennis and Callahan sound like they should be on medication. Couple that with people who are intentionally trying to antagonize, like Michael Felger or Callahan or Sevarin or even that twerp Iggy on the D&C show and I think you're asking for it.

Seriously, does Danny from Quincy sound like a stable individual? How about the "man on the way up"?

radio rule of thumb: they sound 3x better looking than they really are....you must have just lucked out Karson! and even luckier...you found a woman in Alabama who's family tree forked! <---- (one of the few jeff foxworthy jokes that are funny)

well, Danny's thing is probably schtick and the Man On The Way Up is just a caller-invented character... neither are funny.

I don't think Danny is trying to be funny. I think he really believes that he should have an audience. He only calls on weekends because the weekday shows don't show him enough respect. He said once that he graduated from CSB, but never got a job in radio. I think he's a legitimate wacko. You can hear it in his voice.
