Herald publishes the 25-54 numbers

http://news.bostonherald.com/blogs/messengerBlog/

see for yourself. Winter numbers: morning drive has WRKO in 16th, dead last. WTKK's ratings for
that slot were over twice as high, with the now-gone Imus. Another Greater Media outlet,
WKLB country, gets twice as high as WRKO morning show. WROR even hotter (Loren & Wally) etc.

Top 10 stations in 25-54, overall: WMJX in first then: Kiss 108, Jam'n 94.5, WEEI, WBZ,
Oldies 103, WKLB, WROR, and WZLX/WBMX (tie). See article for actual numbers.

Where is WJAM Boston ?? LOL

as a matter of fact http://www.savewrko.com says...

"Mid-morning host Todd Feinburg's numbers fared even worse, turning in Air America-like results. Between 10am and noon, WRKO plunged 71%, with a tiny ... share of the audience in the key 25-54 demographic.
That's half of Finneran's result and far lower than the already dismal figures turned in by former WRKO talker John DePetro. In fact, in looking at every rated talk show host at any time on any station in Boston, Todd was by far dead last, while Finneran ranked second to last in terms of audience share."

Graham went down by 8 per cent
(See article for the actual number Feinburg got...)

Thanks raccoon, and heck, Maloney may actually be telling the truth. I, for one, will wait for a news source as opposed to a gossip columnist with an ax(e) to grind.

Hell hath no fury like a radio wanna-be scorned.

WRKO has a brand new posting for a mid day talk host on the Emerson College alumni career services board. Watch for a new 10 to noon person before the end of summer.

hey the A Guy, don't you think flogging the ratings with Feinburg and Finneran is a WBCN-sized mistake?

A real business would boot them both post-haste

Imagine radio is a baseball or football team. You've got John DePetro pitching. You replace him with
Moe, Larry & Curly? Jason Wolfe can't be that out of touch - they are taking the wrecking ball to
WRKO, probably to boost the other properties. That's the problem with conglomerates owning all the media.
Independent radio would've corrected both the WBCN and WRKO fiascos years ago.

Does anyone here think that maybe the combination of WRKO laying off their entire news team as well as hiring Felon Finneran may have had something to do with these plummeting numbers? Feinburg's plummet, if true, has nothing to do with Finneran. As well, Depetro's numbers were pretty bad too, from what I recall hearing at the time he was let go for calling Grace Ross a "fat lesbian." Thoughts?

I don't think the 'News' thing had an effect, but clearly the Finneran move did. Political distrust is massive in Massachusetts, simply because it is a Democratic state 100% and nothing is working there: Each night is a gunfight at OK Corral in Boston and the focus is always about the guns and never about the crooks; schools are lousy but they still beg for more $$$; illegals are stealing jobs and driving wages lower, but they are beholden voters...so who cares?; the Big Dig is a Big money-pit; Deville Deval can't get his footing; people are leaving Massachusetts left and right; taxes are skyrocketing and the Pols want MORE.

So against that backdrop, WHO wants to tune their radio to someone who turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to this stuff while yacking about all the great 'PROGRAMS' in place and how things are going SWELL? Finneran is clearly painting a gray sky blue, because HIS state is all Democratic and so is he. That is why Finneran is lousy and WRKO sucks during morning Drive. People don't want someone to SAY a gray sky is blue; they want people who can turn it BLUE! And while Deville is busy releasing one criminal or another from jail, the sky gets grayer.

The management deserves the front-page lambasting they got in the Herald the other day.

Chris, since you don't live here and since you appear to be younger, your hatred of the Bay State invalidates your argument.

Finneran is an awful talk show host. There are some excellent politicians in this state that would be perfect
for RKO, but they are too busy. Finneran is connected and out of a couple of jobs, but he just didn't have it where it really matters: the brain and the voice.

Just as Raccoon kept on about Air America not getting #s (Clear Channel wouldn't allow it), you also need to have a product. Al Franken is a comedian and a writer, not a good radio host. Bill Maher would be perfect, as we've discussed on this board.

Whether or not you like Barney Frank he is witty and clever and few can debate on his level. If you team up a politician with a radio pro - a Harvey Wharfield (who has experience on talk radio and knows how to find the right topics) or a Jerry Goodwin or a Len Mailloux, guys with a voice and with experience, you've got a team that has lots of weaponry.

Finneran exposes Jason Wolfe and Julie Kahn's flaws...she is now Julie Kahnnot (as in cannot) and he is
Jason friday the 13th. WRKO needs the Red Sox, so they won't worry about advertising, just cracking the nut that the Red Sox cost.

Keep your essay to the facts and not hyperbole, Chris, and you'd make more sense. You hate Massachusetts. We get it.

Varulven - nicely written, no (well, not much) hyperbole. My only suggestion? Don't feed the trolls.

>>Finneran is an awful talk show host.

Agreed

>>There are some excellent politicians in this state that would be perfect

One is running for President right now and has a "Full Reagan" haircut. The Mittster has done fill ins,
well golly gee..

>>Air America not getting #s (Clear Channel wouldn't allow it)

The thing about prog. talk: yes, I laugh about it not getting ratings but I'm just putting it out there that if
one of the big companies put it on one of their big stations, promoted it, had local hosts...if it succeeded,
huzzah! If not, we know it's the product. I'm kinda being fair and balanced here...basically saying,
OK, lefties, try to do your talk shows and put them on a station with half decent power, etc., and
see if people like it. Let the MARKET decide (and don't mess with any (un)Fairness Doctrine, though
if applied to TV as well it would be interesting. We'd need 3 more conservative news channels! :) )

So far that hasn't happened because they're afraid the WHJJ effect will happen. (Ratings plummeted
because they went AAR. BUT in all honesty they didn't have local hosts either. Oh wait, they did
(Arlene Violet, etc.) Maybe it was the signal.

Hopefully nobody here hates Mass., but maybe they don't agree with how it's being run.

Good points, but in reality, it could just be a perception.

When Finneran controlled Beacon Hill, he was more conservative in many ways than Weld, Celluch, and Swift, especially on social issues. Finneran also worked with the corner office to preserve costly corporate welfare and giveaways which leave taxpayers who earn $20,000 a year paying more in state income tax than Fidelity, Raytheon, Citizens Bank, and many, many others. Hardly liberalism. Let's also not forget that it was Finneran's "loony left" comment that virtually sunk Scott Harshbarger's gubernatorial campaign in 1998. The harsh criticism by Finneran was unfounded. Harshbarger was hardly a Socialist, although he was a consumer advocate and worked hard to protect citizens in the state. But the comments were played over and over again on talk radio and the news and Harshbarger was sunk.

In addition, if you've listened to Finneran's show, he is ranting and raving about the Hollywood liberals and the left not unlike Savage or Limbaugh. So, it's not like Air America has been brought to WRKO. Another part of this is that Finneran's Forum is another example to radio programmers that you just can't put blowhards, loudmouths, and conservatives on the air and assume you will preserve - or grow - market share. This has been proven over and over and over again ...

If anything, programmers probably should have gone with a Mike and Janet-like morning duo, especially compared to what is on Boston radio right now. Or, if they had their hearts set on out-of-work pols - instead of out-of-work radio guys and gals, of which there are MANY - maybe Muffy and Harshbarger? Maybe Muffy would have waved her salary like she did when she was second in command so that her spokesperson could pull down six figures instead of the $90k Swift's spokesperson received.
