Herald: Remembering 2000-09 in local radio, TV

2000-2009

Radio One Boston went stupid

Entercom went Stupid on 107.3 signal

Mike- FM was Born

96.3 R.I.P.

WBCN is DEAD ;) :D :) ;) ;D :D

Star 93.7 is Dead

98.5 The Storts Hub is born :D ;D ;) :)

On air Radio jobs loss 93.7,97.7,92.9,1090,96.3 and so on .

Urban Pirates are born 87.7,106.1,101.3,94.9,102.9,105.3 and so on . ;D :D ;) Pirate Stations RULES !!!!!

Boston's CHR and Rhythmic/Urban (?) powerhouses Kiss 108 and Jamn 94.5 went from being 100% live and local in 2000 to only live and local in mornings and afternoon drive in 2009.

And no one (aside from us "radio geeks") seems to care. ::) :(

I don't think the average listener knows who's VT'd and who's live. Example: 102.9 The Big D the Oldies/Classic Hits Station in Hartford started VT'ing outside of Morning and Afteroon Drive during the Fall of 2008 and everyone I know is surprised when I tell them the jocks are pre-recorded. I won't say Voice-Tracked because I believe that is an industry/radio geek term that the average person wouldn't understand the meaning of the word. Except for subtle clues, I really can't tell they're VT'd. Subtle Clues - Weather Forecasts without the current temperature, No Time Checks, jock saying to email in your request rather than phone in. And then there's an occasional computer screw-up and you're like "Oh yeah, no one's there." Last week the following happened. (I paraphrased in my own words) 12:05PM Floyd Wright: Here's Chic with Le Freak on DRC-FM. Le Freak Begins Playing. A minute later song is cut off. Liner: DRC-FM. New Song Begins.

Kiss has an LA jock in middays and Dallas jock at night. It doesn't matter whether or not a listener knows or understands where the programming originates. If the station is consistently successful programming their format using such a set-up, everyone's happy. Plus, with a format like Top40, it's about the music first, and not so much about the jock's area code.

[/quote] Call me a old radio geek, because it does matter to me. I want a local DJ telling me what is hot in and around the Boston area , not some out-of-town jock talking about some national news.

Fine, you can be you. Another one million listeners don't share the same desires.

YOu can't stop technology. If today's technology was available in the 60's and 70's it would have been used then.

If it wasn't for Al Gore inventing the Internet people would still be getting their music on cassette tapes and 8-track carts.

I'm glad it wasn't even available yet in the '80s and early '90s. Radio jobs I had back then would not have existed if it had been.

I agree .

It's been my experience that what you heard is more likely to be caused by a "live" human in the studio who made a mistake. (Not hard to do with today's touch-screens). Maybe the DJ was tracked, but a Production assistant or someone
needing to make a log adjustment might have been the culprit. (Or maybe the DJ himself hit the wrong button). Virtually all of the time, at least in my experience, when the automation is "on" the event you described just wouldn't happen. Additionally, some jocks may be live part of the time and VT'd at other times, perhaps to take in a meeting or to do some production.

LOL, Indeed, the "Fade N Go" feature in NexGen can be your best friend at times--- but if you tap that mouse by accident--- it can be your worst enemy. 8)
