Herald: Severin, agent to meet to discuss his future with 96.9

It's ironic to hear VB opposite Howie.

It's not quite 'the Pit', but VB's appearance is a welcome change, since:

- He takes more than three calls per hour
- He actually converses with the callers
- We don't have to listen to him boast about his own credentials and/or associates
- He doesn't rely on five minutes of bumper music to pad each segment
- He knows local issues

From today's Globe.
--Someone from an organization urging greater enforcement re: illegal immigration said they wished he
could return to the air, just use less caustic language

--the exec dir of the Mass ACLU said that while Jay has First Amendment rights, "...the fact that the radio station is privately owned suggests that the rights of the radio station to control its content trumps Mr. Severin's First Amendment legal claims."

Harvey Silverglate and an official from the Mexican consulate also weigh in

Thanks for stating the obvious ACLU.

If America took almost the same stand towards illegals that Mexico does I would be happy.
They are quite harsh.

I find it funny that a few years ago when Jay was advocating nuking Iraq because some Iraqis dared resist the U.S. it was not an issue.
Advocate slaughtering untold numbers of innocent people and nothing.
Make a few off the mark sarcastic ethnic stereotype comments and you need to be fired.

""......., but we also strongly adhere to basic principles of civility, common decency and respect for all cultures. We believe Jay's suspension is the best way to uphold both of these corporate policies......"

Coming from the station which has had a years long enduring love affair with Don Imus and was the most 'bitter-ender' of all his affiliates during his late difficulties, this statement is, to say the least, quaint.

Of course, you could do a check of the billing generated by the two programs, but that would be an exercise for someone more cynical than I.

Regards,
TSB

Interesting comments on there; some say yes he has free speech but it's not his radio station--they can
fire him if the wish; while someone else said yes there's free speech but it's not absolute--it can go across
the line. (Certainly economic pressures can result from one's free speech: Natalie Maines had the right to
say what she did about Pres Bush but radio stations had to right to decide not to play her music, or people
had the right to go up to her and use THEIR free speech to disagree...Thus her band may have lost out of
sales of albums or tickets due to the controversy...)

A guy calling himself Ron Borges (not sure if it's the actual writer) says on one comment that basically he
can say what he wants; we can defend the right of free speech, but we also can choose not to listen to
his show or the station OR "If you feel more strongly, engage in the debate and teach the world your principles. "

In other words the best thing that can result from free speech is...more free speech. Others telling him he's
wrong. Of course if he's let go they'll have to do that at another station that hires him, or if they happen
to see him somewhere and decide to bring their objections to him etc

One man's "freedom fighter" is another man's "revolutionary". It all depends
which side of the fence that you happen to be on... Who decides?

I know it's common practice among higher profile entertainers to use agents and lawyers in their dealings with their employers. But doesn't anyone find it ironic, despite the common practice, that someone who espouses rugged individualism and questions why workers need to have representation when dealing with owners/management uses an attorney/agent when he is embroiled in corrective action and/or dismissal and in developing workplace criteria?

Looks like Severin can talk the talk but cannot walk the walk.

Who knew Jay Severin was a hypocrite?

Sounds like WTKK's temp fix for Severin (so, he WILL be back?) is something out of Florida (?)
called The (Todd) Schnitt show. Trying to find info online. During a news break Ed Cherubino
said, "Now back to the Todd Schnitt show, in for Jay Severin".

According to his Wikipedia entry, ""The Schnitt Show" is a conservative radio program that leans somewhat more socially libertarian than traditional conservative."

On a few occasions when in Florida, I've listened to the Schnitt show on WIOD and WFLA. Personally, I like it. Much better than Severin.

I recall coming in from South America and being in Miami, two days after Hurricane Katrina. Schnitt's discussion of that emergency was compelling radio; he even found people hiding out in New Orleans to talk with. Having been out of the country and just returning, it was extra shocking stuff to me.

The guy did a fine job through it all - I think he was only on a few stations in Florida back then. So, he was able to make it even more personal to his listeners. From his website, it looks like Schnitt has expanded his show quite a bit since then. Greater Media would be smart to ditch Severin and put this show on in his place - permanently. It's a better listen.

A smarter move would be a compelling local host, if you can find one.

Is VB available?

Isn't a local host (like VB) a lot more expensive?

Didn't Graham have this timeslot for a while? Why didn't they move him to the afternoon? Are his ratings down as well?

Schnitt was only on for a day; yesterday they had Sliwa.

Yes I think Graham had 3-7 for awhile. He also had 7-10 pm at one point

Todd Schnitt actually pulls double duty for Clear Channel/Tampa. In the morning, he is known as "M.J." on CHR station WFLZ, where he regularly gets in p***ing matches with rival (and former CC employee) Bubba the Love Sponge. His afternoon show, based at WFLA-AM, is syndicated by Dial Global.

Is it possible WTKK could plug in Michael Smerconish for a day or two? He is also syndicated by Dial Global and based in Philly.

Interesting: WTKK's Grace Blazer will receive the "2009 Judy Jarvis Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Talk Radio by a Woman."

I actually met her at last year's Talkers Magazine convention and had a nice, friendly chat with her after a panel she was on. I believe last year's recipient of this award was Laura Ingraham.
