Years ago if you flipped on your favorite AM pop station you'd hear the sounds of a beach party or swimming pool in the background as the DJ spun stacks of wax from a local watering hole or car dealership. You could drop by to talk with them, eat a free hot dog or cotton candy and take home a poster to hang on your wall or a bumper sticker for your car. After dark there would be searchlights with carloads of kids driving from one to the other. The "Sounds of Summer" would be filled with surf music and party tunes and, save Christmas, it would be the most upbeat time of the year in radioland.
And the suits wonder why the kids are not listening.
