Here we go again...Yet another TV show coming to the big screen!

Notice the article gave David McCallum "top billing" in the
U.N.C.L.E. cast reference, based on current popularity.

"Who will Illya look like when he is older?"

"Dr. Donald Mallard."

"Gibbs'll head-slap you for that!" ;)

This, and the fact that Hollywood wants to make a movie about Gilligan's Island, only proves that there are no original ideas left in the minds of the suits who control the movie studios.

Someone want to remind these people about the great success the movie McHales's Navy had?

Not too mention the talk about a movie based on Laverne & Shirley....

OK if these people really feel that they must base their ideas from television then why not get the scripts from one of those TV movie of the 70's? TV flicks like "Smash-up On Interstate 5, "Pray for the Wildcats" or even a remake of "Born Innocent" could work today. "Death of Ocean View Park"..well there is a large amusement park complete with a giant roller coaster in New Orleans that has been shut down ever since Katrina...blow up the place for a movie.

Plus by using ideas from those TV movies, chances are the younger crowd would had never seen the original so it would appear to be a fresh idea to them.

That is, if the rides are still operable... or even there -- according to the Wikipedia article, some of the rides have sustained damage from the floodwaters, and what survived was removed by Six Flags and farmed out to its other parks.

I don't get it. There are fewer original ideas in film, and the ones that are ("Date Night") are lame. I even saw a billboard promoting the "new" "Nightmare on Elm Street" opening later this month! It's like all of these movies are trying to out-lazy each other. And they all start on a Friday! WTF is up with that?

The thinking probably goes like this...

"Hey, the folks who have fond memories of (fill in blank with name of popular TV series of 1960-1980 era) will come see it to check it out, so we'll get adult bodies in the seats. And the kids? If the script's got action and the stars look attractive, they'll show up too...can't miss. Maybe we can even recycle the old scripts."

The truth is, unless the stars aren't at least as interesting as the TV originals (and they often aren't) and the scripts are witty and entertaining (which they also usually aren't) it's a waste of time and Mylar film stock...

The Man from UNCLE also has one other problem--unless you update the villians, it's a relic of the Cold War era that spawned it. This is going to be a tough one to make work for a 2010-11 audience that's almost 50 years removed from the premiere of the original series...
