Here's some KOOL-TV news from 1982

On May 28, 1982, at about 5:00 P.M., Joseph Billie Gwin, wanting to "prevent World War III" forced his way into KOOL-TV studio, fired a shot from his gun, the butt struck Louis Villa in the back of the head, Gwin held Villa in a chokehold, at gunpoint for nearly 5 hours. Gwin took 4 people hostage and demanded nationwide air time. 2 hostages, Jack Webb and Bob Cimino, were released 3 hours later. At 9:30 P.M. anchorman, Bill Close read a 20-minute statement as Gwin sat next to him holding a gun under the table, Close took Gwin's gun after the statement and set it on the table.

Here's some news articles about this I found on google news:

I. too, miss the spirit of television in the 70's and 80's! I loved the upbeat jingles and, as a child, couldn't wait until the networks came out with their fall ad campaigns.

A couple of things:

1. In Seattle, I remember the KIRO (CBS) newsteam jumping around with umbrellas, with "Looking Good Here, Looking Good There, Here on CBS/Channel 7, We're Looking Good!" It was a classic.

2. Who could forget the excitement of the "Action News" and "Eyewitness News" formats? Almost every city had at least one of these, if not both.

I know the footage exists, because I saw it at ASU. Does anyone have the footage of the KOOL hostage thing that they can place on You Tube? Would be so interesting to see again.

Its not video but I posted a topic on here that had the audio recording of the entire manifesto....It was posted about 6 months ago or so

Also had an interview with Bill Close from a few years ago
