Here's who buys the books

Just use the drop-down menus for markets & ratings periods to see which stations subscribe to Arbitron & which are conspicuously absent in the market (like Latina 100.3 & Radio Disney). Just think of it as the obligatory quarterly embargo post.

I'm not really clear on the exact mechanism that causes Arbitron to embargo a market. Does buying the book have to be unanimous among all the commercial staions in a given market? In other words, does it only take one "no-sale" to trigger an embargo?

In looking at the last 4 books covered on the Arbitron website, the only absent stations that really stuck out to me were 100.3, and 97.3.

I find it hard to imagine that any of the other missing parties (550, 990, 1220, 1320, 1450, or 1590) could trigger an embargo.

I don't think everyone in the market has to buy it. I always thought a station or cluster could request the embargo to stop a station that doesn't buy it from seeing the numbers and/or using them to sell. I don't think 97.3 plays any role in the Providence market being a Portugese station in Mass. 1590 is WARV which is religious and I don't even know if they go for local sponsors. 550 probably just sells the Disney format anyway and isn't 1450 a simulcast in RI and New Bedford? WPMZ subscribes but WKKB doesn't so with competition for the Spanish market that could be something there. I saw some Cape Cod stations buying it but not Fun 107. I can't even find the New Bedford Fall River market on the site and they've been embargoed for years.

Wondering if its maybe WFHN and WBSM? I don't seem to see them on the Providence, Boston, or Cape Cod Markets.

it wouldn't be Fun as they are licensed outside of the metro. If the info is correct, possibly Radio Disney and the others mentioned on the FM side would be the ones to kick it in....

Thats annoying, Latina 100.3 doesn't even really need to book and niether does Radio Disney, as they both sell based on format.

I don't like the way Arbitron operates. I don't think that one single station should have the power to make ratings private for the whole damn market. It seems really screwed up.

They're a sales tool so why should a station that doesn't pony up the bucks use them? Granted it doesn't happen with other media but that's radio for you. The more I think of it KKB's numbers improved when they went Spanish then the embargoes hit. Maybe they sell the format itself but they compete with PMZ for a specific type of consumer so that sales competition could be fierce for businesses that target Latinos. So PMZ buys the book and hits the streets with numbers they can quote but KKB has to use doubletalk. I can't understand either station anyway but I seem to remember that KKB might have even been competing a little for some of Hot 106's audience so they could really be the reason. None of the other stations are important enough to worry about.

My point is that there has to be a better system than to embargo an entire market based on the decision of one station.

Sky...look at it from this point of view...why would I as a GM/OM at CC or Citadel or Hall want that info avail for free to someone who isn't willing to pay what all of my stations (yes, each station needs to subscribe, so multiply it x4 for cc and x6 for Citadel) have to pay to get them. We gripe b/c it isn't made avail for the masses; but them's the brakes
