Heros or Has Beens

It would be intersting to get your thoughts on some of the big names who are turning to radio. Are they heros or has beens? Whoopie Goldberg's morning show debuts in New York next week and nationwide later in August. What do you think about those like Whoopie who come into the business? Can they make it? How long? What happens to the radio show when the movie deal comes along? Or the appointment to the White House?

Bothers me a bit that this type gives radio a try, but do they have the patience and dedication to make it work.

Was Tony Snow's radio show just a stepping stone to something better? Did David Lee Roth fail because he didn't have it, or wouldn't do the work?

Amazing how easy people think it is to be good on the radio and how much work it can take!

I'd say has beens. Of the people you mentioned just look at what they were doing before radio. They had to be making more money then. The thought is their name will attract listeners but if they don't have the goods to catch the ear of a mass audience they are history. Plus it sounds easy and their is a misconception that anyone can do radio. Plus if you are a big name the expectations are higher.

Whoppi struck out with her TV talk show so I don't know how well she will do on radio. I wish her the best but if I were in her shoes I would never even attempt it. If I did I would make sure there were writers on staff. Coming up with new material every day is hard!

I think Tom Snyder did a great job on the radio but then he's a broadcaster who I'm sure did radio before. Plus he was not doing a morning drive show. He got back into TV as soon as he could. Tom is a great storyteller.

There are some others who have tried ...

Newt Gingrich - daily commentary lasted five months or so.
Alan Dershowitz - Sunday night show is done
Maurio Quomo - Saturday morning show lasted a little over a year.
Tony Snow - didn't last long.
Mary Matlin - less than a year.
Sam Donaldson - is his show still on? How much longer can it las

He only left to become Press Secretary for the White House. Had that chance not been there, he'd have never left, and he'll be back at FNC about 5 minutes after that gig is up.

My point is that most of these people look at radio as a stepping stone to something else - particilarly those who have been in an around politics. Now it seems to be those who have been in other forms of show biz!
