Herrrrrrrre come the VACUUMS!

Man I miss hearing those at Buc stadium..I got to be at the FIRST Buccaneer home game ever in the 70's..and it was HOT, but electric! And then there was the jumbotron-like big screen and the State Vacuum promo..."heeeeere comes the VACUUMS!" I just loved that.

Hey today I went into Radio Shack, and bought a little mini-plug to RCA stereo plugs adaptor to "try something"

We have an old high-milage beater Dodge minivan that we use to transport the dogs to the vet and the kennel with and to rescue other stranded dogs and cats from the pound to take to thier new adoptive familiess. It's not pretty, but it has a neat stereo input jack to plug in two RCA plugs..so I connected my Palm Treo to the AUX input..Within minutes I was hearing streaming audio from KOOL in Phoenix, KIXI in Seattle, KAAM in Dallas...and on and on..even Rivera Radio in Monaco..and it sounded right up there with Sirius or XM. Not quite FM, but not as bad as a cassette.

Wow..there ya go!

THAT is where radio will head..and moreover the playing field will level out with individuals who do NOT need an FCC license or a transmitter, or expensive real estate or towers or a staff of egos who will come up with innovative programming. I could even hear those kids on WKID in my CAR in Atlanta! And Old Time Radio shows from Philly..and Country music from Canada, and Classic Rock from an online only station in Savannah..and on and on and on..forever! Adult Standards if I want them..when I want them..from Los Angeles, and New York City, and Grants, New Mexico. There is a guy streaming lounge music in Elko, Nevada...Wow..I'm a kid again! And I am driving around hearing this on my car stereo over the freakin' PHONE!

Not much longer before IP enabled car systems will be standard. Pioneer and Alpine are already marketing them in Switzerland and Korea.

No more baloney HD2 streams maintained only to keep the government happy. No nore XM sameness, no more Sirius subscriptions. I pay my cellphone account and I'm set to go.

So as far as terrestrial radio goes..and I love this industry..so I hate to say this..but...

"Heeeeere come the VACUUMS!"

Amen to that.

The group owners will NEVER admit it... but they have succeeded in commoditizing their products. As soon as there is an easier, more convenient, and more desirable way to consume their product (ie a bunch of songs in a row), the lights will be turned off for the last time. Just like the old corner drug store when Wal-Mart came to town.

What are they doing to keep this from happening? In the vast majority of cases... absolutely nothing.

Nothing. I actually liked you on 95.7 and wanted to hire you 20 years ago, but other parties you must had done something to get them pissed off.

I am just saying that the radio trolls on Radio-Info.com think that I think the world is still flat. I have no such belief and have always maintained that TCP/IP will be the digital delivery method in the future, not IBOC.

I am just welcoming you to that conclusion - one I've been at for 9 years or so now.

Randy it's a good thing radio is just a warm body business this days, because anyone who only knows you from these threads wouldn't want to work for you. Ever. Yelling, screaming, telling people they're stupid and generally belittling the insight of people who have worked in radio their entire adult lives strikes me as the sign of an arrogant jerk/bully and that's exactly how you're coming across here. Radio people used to be like wife beater type families. The cycle perpetuated itself because the victims didn't know they had any choice and upper management enabled abusers because they "got the job done" and all that matters to them (and apparently to you) was the numbers. Well, the one good thing about the modern radio biz is that a lot of people are getting forced out and finding out that yelling, screaming and humiliating underlings are not considered best management practices in most places.

If you ever watched Star Trek, you might remember the classic episode "I Mudd" where the intergalactic scoundrel Harry Mudd built a robot of his "dear" wife to remind of why he became a space-going vagabond. Any time he felt homesick he would fire up the robot, which would immediately start nagging him about, his drinking, his weight and general sorriness. He immediately got over his homesickness. If robots ever became something other than a sci-fi I must just build one of you (or any one of a number of others) just to remind me of why I left the business. No, it wasn't the stupid hours, the lack of advancement opportunities or the money that a Burger King burger flipper would laugh it. It was managers who got ahead by stabbing people in the back, stepping on people and generally throwing their weight around.

I guarantee anyone in any other industry would look at a couple of these threads and wonder why anyone would put up with managers like that in an industry that's getting smaller and less relevant every day.

That's okay man..Actually I was still drinking when I was at 95.7..a lot of people liked me better then anyways, and I probably did piss off a few unknowingly. For that I am truly sorry..

I have known that IP radio would be a future for about as many years, but to actually be able to DO it and notice the quality..then THINK about it's implications is kinda neat.

Please come down here for a football game! We would love for you to stop by here and say hi. Your #1. Thanks for all the help. Adam and all of us from WKID.
