Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

Re: Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

as I mentioned in another thread comparing WODS to WEEI 850 in the 18-34 male demographic is comparing apples to oranges.

She is not comparing them. You totally missed her point - WEEI is as unappealing to younger male demos as WODS. It's a valid connection to make when talking about the Hub 98.5 which is all about younger male listeners. That's all.

Re: Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

Yup--and saw your post on Herald board about that. I also mentioned that WMKK would have been perfect to add WEEI/Red Sox programming but they are getting good ratings/billing with "Mike" at low cost and as I said, interesting what if:

--What if CBS had launched a Jack or Mike-like format on 103.3? And it was a success? (Ent.
beat them to the punch with Mike)
--Entercom might have decided to move or simulcast WEEI on 93.7
--Thus bringing the Boston market FM sports, via Entercom...and CBS might NOT have launched Sports Hub. OK, maybe they still would have but... :)

Re: Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

"Oldies 103" on must search engines still brings up the correct site.

Re: Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

I wonder why she hates WEEI so much. I'm sure Chad Finn is under orders from the Globe to slam those dirty Republicans whenever he can. She's been a cheerleader for 98.5 since they went on the air. Maybe she'll change her mind when she gets banned from covering something.

The woman known as Howie Carr's secretary?

T'is a poser :)

I was known to call her "Howie Carr's Secretary", later amended to "Howie Carr's Publicist".

Maloney's SaveWRKO blog, in suspended animation since Apr of last year (he bothered to renew
the domain name but has made no more posts), had a pic of her next to Tom Finneran after
Finneran joked about a "jumping whale", perceived as a slam against Howie's producer Nancy Shack.

>>Photographer Mark Garfinkel (who took the above picture) and reporter Jessica Heslam were waiting as the sleazemeister headed to his vehicle. And what does The Felon have to say for himself? Almost nothing. Clearly, Entercom’s lawyers are running this show. What’s next for Carr’s camp?

So... :) Meanwhile, a lot of news has happened in Boston talk radio since April of 2010, including
Jay Severin's permanent vacation. Any comments, Brian? :)

Yes, another salvo from the Radio Equalizer's relentless assault on Finneran. What ever did happened to 'ole' Tom? I bet Entercom must have tossed him overboard just to stop the pain.

....................I still say when they made the move to the sports hub, the WBZ-FM call letters

should have gone to 103.3, and the 98.5 position should have been WSHB-FM.

It would of ended the "o" problem.

Re: Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

Interesting; they are playing upon the heritage calls of WBZ--news talk for AM, sports for FM
for Sports Hub, but they could have done that, yes.

And yes, Tom Finneran still survives on 680 mornings.

The Mansfield Christian School of Mansfield OH would probably have had a few choice words about that...such as "I don't think so."

Re: Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

I wonder if the Bruins contract stipulated they had to air on a WBZ Radio, without specifying the AM?

CBS also does the same for their FM sports talker in Pittsburgh (sharing the KDKA-FM calls with their AM and TV stations there) as well...

WEEI-AM (850) tied for 14th place with “Oldies 103″ with a 2.1 share.

Last I checked, WODS isn't using the "O" word that often anymore.

(Remember, this is the same columnist that wrote that WODS was going to flip to an all-talk format. ::) )
So "Oldies" is a dirty word now? To paraphrase: We are boomers, hear us roar; in numbers too big to ignore. There are still millions of us around. Our kids are grown, our mortgages are low. We have more disposable income than before. We're just a lot smarter about how we spend it. It would be foolhardy to ignore that market. Companies have been getting rich off us since the days of Howdy Doody. I'd wait a few more years before giving up on us.

You're a bunch of pinch-pennies now, and less likely to buy a new expensive device or other profitable item.

How likely is an 18 year old to buy a Lexus? Of course I'm not always right.

...and because you are "smarter about how we spend it," you are much less easily swayed by advertising, which is why advertisers generally stay away from the 55+ demos.
