Hey, Bob Visotcky: WHY bother???????

According to LARadio.com, Bob thinks 92.7 is "an Orange County based Adult Contemporary station that reaches from San Juan Capistrano to Simi Valley and targeted to women 30-45 with a 37-year-old female as the bulls eye."

Orange County-based????? Whaaaaat??? :)

Really why bother filling a hole (30-45 y.o. women) that's already filled by My104.3 and KOST?

How much different will the "new" format be from what had been JILL-FM for the last three years? This is a waste of a weak signal. Bob's statement makes it sound as though the signal reaches a greater territory than in actual practice.

As to the "extensive bus board campaign throughout Orange County", guess those are replacing all the 100.3fm The Sound ads at the bus stops. How'd that work out?

The station cannot be compared to Jammin' Oldies KCMG given the signal restrictions.

Hey Bob, why why why? Why did you not even consider an Adult Rock station OR and Indie-type station? Why carve out territory where everyone has gone before? :p

Sounds like they are going to go on the assumption that 40 year old women listen to the same music now that they have been listening to for the last 20 years. I just heard a 30 year old Rolling Stones song folowed by a 25 year old Janet Jackson song. It sounds really trite....and bus benches in OC? Wrong idea in wrong area

Actually, the top 5 in Women 30-45 are KBIG, KIIS, KOST, KLVE and KHHT.

If you add the shares they come to 30 for these 5, meaning that there are 70 more shares in the demo... in 6 to 10th place, we find KTWV, KFI, KCBS-FM, Power and KYSR.

KISS has an album named "Psycho Circus."

So I have to ask, does the radio industry believe at all in psychographics?

You speak of holes and women.  And I'm reminded of that SHAT I took recently (SHAT = Sexual Harassment Awareness Training.)

Why does it matter so much in this age where 50 is the new 30 the gender and age of the listener?  KISS it to me, Keep It Simple, Sexy-one.

I was a bit surprised too, considering their studios are based in Ventura county.

We haven't had a local commercial English OC based station in years! I've wondered from time to time (in this day in age) if an English language commercial station could do OK in the OC.

It is quite apparent to me that they are pulling an AMP. They want to shave off just enough share/revenue from the competition to justify the changes and to bring in more money to the station. If they do everything really cheap, it may work.

Anyone think an English language commercial station (with proper signal, formatting, etc.) could make 100K a month?

Wouldn't you consider The Fish an OC station? While licensed to the LA County town of La Mirada, the transmitter site puts nearly all the usable signal over Orange County, not LA county.

The Fish, last year, billed $500 k to $600 k a month.

and their studios are where, David?? LOL c'mon DE that's a stretch even for you. All the time The Fish has been on the air (since mid-2000) they have not been in OC except for their transmitter. Speaking of that stick, I find it funny that it "resides" in someone's back yard!! (I've been there in person)

I did not realize their COL had changed over the years.

To Kyle, I guess KWVE 107.9 is a commercial (?) English language OC station, but why count them anyway? :D

Something close to 90% of the 70 dbu coverage hits OC, with just a tiny bit getting into LA County; with today's studio rules (what rules?) I'm not sure that studio location matters. The service area is almost entirely Orange. And the billing looks quite nice.

OK David I'll spell it out for you: we were talking about radio station(s) that are Orange County based

(I don't care about the billing [that was Kyle's question] but I used to do business with The Fish.)

WHY do you have to argue every point ad nauseum, makes you look ridiculous, my friend!! ;)

OK, being blunt: if most of the listeners, most of the signal and most of the sales opportunites are in Orange County, to me The Fish is an OC radio station. Ah, and on the website, the majority of the events and concerts are in places like Irvine, Santa Ana, Anaheim, etc... all OC locations.

Since the station only covers a tiny bit of LA County, but does cover about 85% of the population of Orange, it's an OC station. Maybe you don't think Contemporary Christian is a significant format, but KFSH meets all the criteria for being a local OC station except for having a centralized studio. I can think back to the ealy 70's and recall numerous stations that did not have a signal at their studio location, or at least did not have a night signal... so studio location is immaterial.

Master control for several NBC TV stations in CA, such as San Francisco's KNTV and San Diego's KNSD, are in Burbank. That does not make them LA stations...

Yes and no. I've always viewed them as a wannabe LA station, even though the signal doesn't really hit LA. At one time I listened to the station (not enough music and too female oriented for me). Commercials were slightly OC based, but it was obvious that they were not trying to be OC local. The station is based out of the Salem building in Glendale.

The 95.9 signal bills 500 to 600 k a month? That is quite surprising to me.

Remember when their original studio location was the Disneyland hotel? That was OC local.

Their COL is now Anaheim/Los Angeles.

That's a very good point SRF. I did neglect to mention KWVE. As far as I know, KWVE is still more or less commercial. I've noticed that they don't air many ads these days.
The probably fully paid for that signal many years ago.

I once talked with someone that worked at KWVE when their studios were still located in San Clemente. He mentioned that the studio was run out of a small room (about the size of a master bedroom).
When the station signed on long ago, they had a secular music format and were not owned by Calvary Chapel. One song they played was Show and Tell (remember that golden great?).

Quick question David. Where are you finding your billing information?

It's not that I think that Contemporary Christian isn't significant. To me it just seems like it's an operation out of LA. Orange county isn't really mentioned by their voicetracked personalities. It just seems that LA is their market and not the OC, even though the signal proabaly doesn't get to their studio in Glendale.

The sources for revenue figures or estimates are BIA (BIA Financial... google 'em), Millar Kaplan if you are with a participating station, or the station or it's parent company's financial filings.

Or, of course, someone who has access to someone who has this data...

Visotcky is planning on moving the primary operation to OC anyway. He is setting up new spaces in an industrial strip mall in Lake Forest. That way he can still live in San Diego.

Interesting! I wonder if the operation will be in the area where their old Lake Forest sales offices were once located?

Since Lake Forest isn't far from me, maybe I could hit them up for a job ;D Oh wait, it'll probably be voicetracked. Oh well....

Those monthly sales figures for The Fish are bogus. Not even close.
