What we should be specualating about is who's a willing trade partner for KSWD? Citadel? SBS? Emmis? (Emmis could trade Chicago for LA...)

Good analysis, but I doubt Citadel is a trade partner for anything, except maybe Chapter 11. It's penny stock doesn't impress too many people.

SBS is rumored to be selling or trading KXOL. They are looking for a tv station in Los Angeles for their www.mega.tv venture. They'd like NBC/Universal's KWHY/22 which they may finally be forced to sell. NBC/Universal should not be getting waivers to run 3 local tv stations.

Emmis is a seller, not a buyer or trader. They made moves with the KMVN license a few weeks back that indicates so (as posted in Net News on All Access).

Citadel is the penny stock company on its last day on the NYSE yesterday, now traded OTC.

Bad debt is not all that bad for some players in the media biz who are playing their cards for future control when these companies file Chapter 11. Read this article http://www.nypost.com/seven/03052009/business/betting_on_bad_debts_158087.htm

That one has been in the trades, with some prominent names in Miami and Spanish langauge radio mentioned.

A Spanish language radio website has an item dated yesterday that has Emmis LMA'ing Movin' to GRC from Mexico who will do a regional Mexican format on it similar to La Z in Mexico City, a station with a 17 share in a 65 station market.

A 17 share in a 65 station market is pretty good. I was always under the impression that Regional Mexican was not that big in the D.F. and was more popular in the rural areas.

There are about 28 to 30 "grupera" format ("Regional Mexican" is a US-origin term) shares in Mexico City.

If you venture out of the hotel and tourist areas of the Capital and surrounding areas in the state of Mexico, you can see that half of the rural population seems to have come to the DF. That's a big part of the population growth of the market, now approaching 24 million persons.

Yeah grupera or regional mexican is much more popular now then what it once was in el D.F. Like David said you get out of the areas of the city like Santa Fe and Polanco and there are many people from Michoacan and Jalisco that have come to the capital that listen to mexican regional. The middle & upper classes do not listen to it.

17 share? Is that even remotely possible in LA with all of the other Spanish stations? Is it even remotely possible for an English station to get a 17 share in this market?

David, I'm listening online to the Z. To my Gringo ears, the station sounds very similar to what KSCA,KLAX and KBUE play, I even recognize some of the songs. So why would this station be successful in LA?

KIIS had a 10.0 in the fall of 1984, and to the best of my knowledge, that hasn't happened since.
Correct. It won't ever happen again, either.

I don't think they would do the same thing as in Mexico City here. GRC is very research driven (they use Coleman in Mexico, I believe) and would likely look for a variant. You'd have to ask Francisco Aguirre or the Aguacate themselves, though, as I have not worked for them for decades.

Started seeing ads on the sides of buses that say something like:

"The deeper side of rock. 100.3 The Sound."

They're hard not to miss in orange instead of the blue scheme they've been using.

This is the equivalent of repainting the deck on the Titantic on a certain April night...

You're almost right. It's like repainting the deck of the Titanic NOW at the bottom of the sea. This station has already sunk itself.

I was driving westbound on Crown Valley Pkwy towards the ocean thru Laguna Niguel late this afternoon and spotted the "new" Sound logo at a bus stop. Since I was not listening to them at that moment, I quickly tuned in because I wanted to hear how the reception was. There's a big hill to the right (north blocking a clear signal) And as I suspected, very spotty and scratchy signal. The logo sucks.... only thing I noticed was the "Deeper" blurb.

The consistently low ratings will eventually doom the station but that is a shame because I like it. I always have. I think it is indeed deeper than most rock stations. Perhaps not as deep as some rock purists would like but deeper than your average classic rock station. I also like that the currents are AAA oriented. Perhaps they should play more currents to satisfy the AAA purists but I like the ones they do play. It looks like the early posters regarding the Sound were correct; LA just doesn't have the demographics to support AAA.

I'm just a dumb listener so my opinions, of which I have many, is of no use to researchers. The biggest fault of The Sound is they "say" they are playing deep cuts and love to wax on and on about it but very rarely deliver on their own mission statement. Playing Pink Floyd's "Dogs" or Traffic's "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" is neither eclectic or even original (it's an excuse for the DJ to get an extra doughnut and coffee and an extended bathroom break). I figured this out the first 2 months they started. I wanted to like the station but it's an insult to be so disingenuous by saying you are doing one thing and then slide safely between JACK and KLOS.

Their 10@10 has bigger potential than "Here's some stuff from 19xx." The Sound could really expand on a theme to make it not some tried-old flashback. What about "Artists that were fired from successful bands to become just as if not more successful"? That's probably not the best example but you get the general idea. Expand the themes to something that is less generic than "Showcase: Year X".

It's probably too late for The Sound. The audience they once had have been defrauded and won't be back. Flip the format to Brigham Young teachings and at least get a loyal following.
