Hello everyone

I have an interesting idea, I have heard people say that classic rock is a dying format. I am undecided on the issue, but lets all do something that I hope will be fun and interesting. Today is November 23rd 2005 from today until 12/23/05 I would like to keep this thread open for the coming month if possible so that the world can excersize the right to vote and make your voices and opinions heard. Below is how I propose we do the vote so that it is as fair as it can be. The question is "Is classic rock a dying format?"

1. I encourage everyone to write wether you work in radio or not, it dosent matter if you are in the radio industry as this is a vote for all people, average writes like me and yes even modorators can vote everyone can make thier voices heard.

2. Pleas only one vote per person/username

3. Voting will end at midnight (eastern time) on 12/23/05

4. Lastly everyone can write thier opinions free speech is what this is all about, but remember to please keep it civil. Please make sure that after you have written your remarks you write one of the fallowing responses (Yes) (No) or (Undecided) at the end of one month we can all count the votes.

"note to modorators" if you need to close the thread before 12/23/05 go ahead but please keep in mind what I am trying to do here. I have asked everyone to keep it civil and I don't know if such a thing has ever been done on radio-info before. I want this to be a fun and interesting vote for all, so come on lets make our voices heard :)

no..as much as i hate the repetition factor. the classic rock station in town is about the only fm i still listen to ever..and thats just at work. its also a top 5 station in town and has been for nearly 10 years.also look at the pittsburgh numbers that just came out..look who is #1 12+..they can still sell it. where as modern rock/ active rock isnt so easy anymore..btw i am 37 and worked in radio for about 10 years..<P ID="signature">______________

Classic Rock

Very good question jermster. I'm not sure what to think, but I think the number of classic rock stations has lowered quite a bit in the past couple of years, but I still think there is a good number of classic rock stations and some successful ones.

Q104.3 in NYC (has a very loyal audience)
103.7 WNNJ in Newton, NJ (small market, but does well)
101.5 WPDH in Poughkeepsie, NY (heritage and very successful)

Thats all I can think of, especially since, I can listen to all those stations! I just know that the stations I hear, do well.

The issue is, classic rock isn't too far behind oldies. You know how the country has lost many oldies radio stations this past year? Well, classic rock isn't too far behind and will likely die off since the target demos are getting older and older, but, these stations may be able to survive a couple extra years because, they will probably start to shift to more modern rock and 90s and the music goes farther into the 80s, meaning there is still some time for classic rock stations. The problem with oldies is, it stuck with the 60s and 70s too long.

No way is classic rock a dying format, especially "out in the country." Pink Floyd, Stones, Doors, etc. have and will continue to have tremendous staying power.

No..Classic Rock is NOT dying and here is why:

Oldies is a dying format because of the format's musicial selection (as it's mainly a 50's- very early 80's format at most..it's hit it's last area to grow to IMO without having to shift to being a classic hits station like some oldies stations have already done)

Classic Rock however is shifting it's main playlist focus every few years to accomidate it's newer listeners and shift with 25-54 demo most classic rock stations are after. I mean look at it this way, Classic rock was mainly a 60s- early 80s format just 10-15 years ago.. Now listen as more CR stations play Metallica,GNR, even Pearl Jam (gasp). CR stays about 10-15 years behind the new rock stations as the new rock listener gets nostalgic and tired of the newer material and falls back in love with classic material. I've even seen a recent news article of people not usually associated with Classic Rock loving classic Rock ... How about a 13-17 YO Demo?!?!?!? http://www.macon.com/mld/macon/entertainment/13205413.htm

Classic Rock won't die, It'll just shift with the demo....

The Classic Rock format is basically holding its own; it might not exactly be growing but it's certainly Not in decline either.

No. Unlike oldies, classic rock seems to have considerable appeal to an audience that was too young to ever know the music when it was current. Many of the core artists...Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Stones, etc. are quite popular with 20somethings (my 27 y.o. stepson & his friends listen to CR much more than they do "their" generation's music).

That having been said, I'm not sure if the format isn't kind of boxed in as far as being able to evolve. 60s music is being phased out except for a handful of tunes, but I really can't see that much mainstream (as opposed to altrock) rock released after the mid-80s is especially "classic"....most of the so-called "hair" bands had the shelf life of the average late 90s boy band. Not sure how altrock fits in...totally different audience, and "traditional" AOR audiences didn't like it very much to begin with.

nsync and bon jovi ???
