Hey JBhouston71! Those BOB FM sweepers?

I've been reading your posts and you always talk highly about the station in Austin called BOB FM and the sweepers they play. Here in Houston I don't get to hear that radio station in Austin.

It's killin' me. Can you recite some of those sweepers here to give us a sneak preview?

Hey Radiodial,

Well, I hope I didn't build up too much suspense. They aren't that exciting, but they do sound different than anything we have here. Here are a couple of them...

"When it comes to fishing, Bob's a catch-and-release kind of guy. When it comes to music, not so much!"

"Bob's been to all the continents...including Antarctica. His favorite spot on earth...Austin, Texas"

"During the break, Bob's been pondering what to play next. Let's see what he came up with..."

"Bob lives at 103.5"

"Bob's mom is really excited about her son's new station. Okay, so she doesn't get out very much."

I'm paraphrasing on some of those, but that's the general idea.

If I can pick it up, I'll try to find some others...there are some longer ones that they use at the top of the hour.

There are others, including some longer ones. I just like them because they are different than the typical radio sweepers with sound effects, etc. that say the same thing all the time. I'm sure the BOB sweepers get repetitive for the people in Austin that listen to it all of the time. I just think they are funny because they try and personify BOB. There's one about him breaking up with an old girlfriend and one about him having an unsuccessful relationship with a UT sorority girl.

I'm also not trying to advocate the jocklessness of some of those stations. BOB sometimes has jocks on the air, but I can't tell if they are prerecorded/voicetracked or not. I remember one jock commenting on Chinese New Year. He joked and said something like "Yeah, it's tough...It's the year of the Rooster...and I still keep writing Monkey on my checks!"

Hopefully, if BOB/JACK etc. are a trend to come in radio, that these stations do start to add more and more live personalities. I'm not just saying that to please the personality folks that read this board, either. Honestly, I've listened to JACK Dallas online (I've said this before) and the lack of personality makes the station horribly dry...even if the music is good.

Also, I don't know if I'm just getting a "grass-is-greener" effect when listening to BOB. So far I like that station. I've read John Davis' posts and agree that those stations might get repetitive after several days of listening. I just haven't had the chance to do that (I haven't been to a BOB/JACK city for an extended time).

The JACK that CW mentioned below (from Vancouver) is good. It has some of those types of liners (I don't think they speak of JACK like he's a person, but they do refer to the station) but it also has live jocks. I think they even have a morning show of some sort.

I'll try and come up with some more BOB liners if I get a chance in the next few days...

The funny thing is that I really don't dislike most of the songs that Jack plays, but the whole anti-radio jockless approach just leaves me cold.

Perhaps it's because I know too much about how radio works and can see through the whole thing... maybe my view would be different if I was "just" a listener. But there's not enough meat to hold my interest.<P ID="signature">______________

I know what you mean...but I do think even "just listeners" notice when a station is just on auto-pilot, but I have heard jocks on weekday afternoons as well as on weekend mornings on BOB.

I just think the sweepers on BOB are kind of funny, but that doesn't mean they can't have good jocks on top of that. The ones I've heard on BOB seem energetic and good...but I don't think they are on for a very large portion of the day.

Hopefully BOB-FM will see the light and get some more people on there. I really like the station musically, but I wonder if people in Austin will get tired of it quickly if they do not beef the station up with personalities. I get really tired of JACK Dallas (online) because there is NOBODY there at all.

I have (when I get a chance) heard spots for BOB-FM being out on the streets (at stores, restaurants, etc.) for events around Austin. I wonder who, from the station, shows up for those...and whether people stop and ask where BOB is? How do they explain that? :)

Other BOB sweepers I remember (some have male and female voices alternating)...

"Bob's music is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're going to get"

"At work, get your boss to listen to BOB-FM...maybe he'll become more spontaneous and fun also!"

"According to BOB-'less is more' only applies to...perfume" (and you'll hear srpaying in the background-also I wonder if that's a jab on Clear Channel)

"Bob has a Texas size juke box...it's bigger...it's better!"

"Bob thinks variety is the spice of life...he'll keep saying that until he finally says 'I do'"...(I think BOB has a tough time with the ladies)

"Bob shops at Kroger because they have the lowest prices on..." oh wait...that was another station ;)

There's also one about BOB never having a mullet...but I didn't catch the end of it (DX problems).

There are others, but I can't remember them.

Again, I just like the music and the sweepers on BOB. I'm *not* promoting the jockless approach by any means! :)

Radiodial, I hope I didn't disappoint with some of the sweepers...I guess I kind of hyped them up a bit much before!

JB

PS- Sorry for all the Austin talk on the Houston board!

Thanks JB! I've read them all that you have posted and I do see how those sweepers could be quite entertaining to follow along with -- always wondering what BOB is up to next. Very clever way to get the listener to not switch the channel during commercial break if you can keep them interested in the next BOB "Adventure."

That whole thing could be developed further into an entire Homer Simpson family type of deal and be long running for years as people follow along as the BOB family goes through life's ups and downs.

Thanks gain for posting those sweepers!

JB, I live in Austin and can tell you it is a refreshing change to the radio landscape. I have also heard Jack in Dallas, and I like the Bob presentation much better. It is much more friendly. Jack is pretty much, 'in your face' as Bob is much more inclusive of it's listeners. They actually have a listener comment with an older sounding drunk saying (paraphrasing, but it cracked me up) "I like your station so much, I think I'll have another drink.... and it's 5am!"

And yes, they have jocks and they appear to be live. I only think they have them in Middays and Afternoons, but they do sound live. (yesterday during severe weather it was pretty obvious they were live)

Just thought I'd add my 2-cents to the thread.

That's good to hear. I hadn't been able to listen to the station much, so I didn't want to dish out opinions on it, but when I've listened to it, I liked what I heard. I'm glad they have jocks on the station. Hopefully they'll continue to do so. The ones I've heard are pretty energetic and upbeat sounding.

I don't know if we'll get a station like that in Houston. I do think BOB in Austin much different (and better) than JACK in Dallas, both in presentation, jocks, and music. BOB really plays a wider variety of stuff, from what I can tell.

Thanks for the response...I've heard the listener call-ins but not that (drunk) one. That's a good one!

Glad you liked them. I think they are funny in that they characterize BOB. The ones I've heard on Jack are OK, but they just talk about JACK the station.

I've heard one too that said something like "The girls Bob used to date all liked Journey's love songs" and then they'd actually play one.

I think BOB has a good combination of those (clever sweepers) and air personalities. It makes me want to listen to the station (when I can) even if they play a few songs that would otherwise turn me off.

I like the format. I think some people here are against it because of the perception that all of those stations are jockless, but I think there are examples of stations (Jack in Vancouver, BOB Austin to an extent, and I think there is a BOB in Norfolk VA or something like that) that have a good on-air staff (I think the Vancouver and VA stations have a nearly full schedule of DJs). Just because a station is BOB or JACK doesn't mean it has to be jockless.

But maybe we will get a "HOMER-FM" in Houston. I'd imagine that would be a pretty sweet station...lol

I think something like that would work really well and be highly entertaining. Picture a Homer Simpson type family that basically had skits around each play set and would argue over who got to play what. Add some more skits that follow the development of the HOMER-FM family's trials and tribulations and it could be quite engrossing to the listener for a long run of years or so.

I think Clear Channel and Infinity needs to hire both you and me at 250K/year to get them to the next plateau in music radio broadcasting... :)

That's the BEST idea I've ever read on this board!

I'd imagine first thing on Monday, there will be a thread from the big shots at CC/Infinity/etc. trying to contact us to make an offer. In fact, I'm surprised it hasn't happened already... :D

You mean they haven't called you yet? I just inked a 300K/yr deal with both Infinity and Clear Channel. I have full creative control of 3 stations from each in large 5+ markets.... :D

I am rolling out 3 new exciting formats:

UPTOWN-FM

"A long running script of the a smooth international playboy type who is constantly trying to wooo the ladies that he brings up to his uptown penthouse with his extradonary taste in jazz music but always manages to goof up and scare the ladies off but he is too vain to realize it, so he keeps doing more of what isn't working for him."

BASEMENT_ROCK-FM

"In this format we follow the trials and tribulations of a kid who runs a pirate show from his mom's basemet complete with naked girl posters all over the wall and constantly thinking he is going to change the world in between doing chores for his mom who is constantly nagging him to be man."

HOMER-FM

"The one that started it all!" (see previous posts)

Ooooooh...that's cold! But funny!

I still say that's the way to go!

Another Austin BOB tagline I caught:
"Bob's eighth grade teacher told him to bring enough music for everybody!"

They also had a jock on yesterday, from what I heard. I couldn't tell whether it was recorded or not...but I'll save that for another discussion.

I'll let you get back to the voice-tracking arguments...
