Hey, Joe!

Anyone heard from Joe McMillian lately? I'm hopin' he's doing all right.

He's a good man! Even if he runs his headphones too loud. (Insert funny story music here...)

Joe was on Magic 106.7 one Sunday afternoon; I was working on Country 96.9. Greater Media's studios were on the 2nd floor of the old Salada Tea Building on Stuart St in Boston. Studios ensconsed in a fortress-of-solitude section, while the little disc jockey's rooms were located outside of said fortress. While I was trying to return to the air studio from a visit to said Little Disc Jockey's room, the push-button cypher-lock somehow broke INSIDE the big wooden door. (push the little number buttons and the entire unit would recess into the hole in the door - no engagement possible, ergo no unlocking of door.) I was able to get the door to somehow open about three inches from the bottom and screamed for Joe, who was about 25 feet away in the Magic Air Studio. Joe couldn't hear me as he does his show with his cans on - LOUD - the whole time.
By the time the non-english speaking security guard was able to get me back in by way of another secured entryway, I got 96.9 back to its regular programming (a back-up tape system that kicks in on silence sense had performed flawlessly), and went to see Joe - who took his headphones off and asked how things were going!

Joe - let us know how you're doing?

Chuck Tell Cary I said Hi
Joe

Hi Chuck! Hi Joe!

Like a lot of other sometime working broadcasters...I wouldn't mind a few VO opportunities as well?

One of these days, I'm going to have to go into my audio vault and reference my WGAN section. Included in my radio archives are promos and support materials for THE MAINE CATALOG SWEEPSTAKES and LIVE FREE FOR A MONTH contests. I don't think there has been any other radio station in Maine that has attempted promotions like these?

Joe...along with the late Cousin Bob Walker...were on many of the actual promos. Peter Jamerson voiced several of the prize packages...which included a custom-built home!

Considering the fact that so many Maine houses are up for foreclosure these days...maybe Cary P should rework & resurrect the concept?

Hi Chuck, Hi Joe, Hi Argytunes,
Argytunes when your looking in the WGAN audio Vault, can you send me the promo's for "Supper With Tupper"?
thanks!

Hi Butters925!

I know I've got a few of the SUPPER WITH TUPPER promos too!

If memory serves me right, Jack Welford...who was the WGAN GSM when I produced them...was featured on at least one of them. Of course, the catch phrase for all of them was: I'm Jack Tupper and I've brought you supper!

And if you happened to a WGAN listener when the promos were aired...you already know that Jack Tupper delivered that line himself! :D

tunes,
I was like 10 yrs old when they were airing, I remember someone saying in one of the promo's "get the shark repellent!" I think it was the late cousin Bob. Hey has anyone talked to Robert or Bob Gearthey (Grady)? He called me back in Sept.07 something about living in New Jersey...Any updates? I know he was a great help to cousin's family in his final days!

Bob Grady (Gerathy) is in New Jersey, helping to take care of his elderly father. At last word, he was doing some part-time stuff for Greater Media down there, and still doing the mobile-entertainment gigs to fill in the gaps.

Butters...

You might be thinking of the WGAN BACKYARD BARBECUE CONTEST promos? This was when one of the WGAN air personalities would come to a winner's home with a grill and enough food to feed up to 20 people!

I remember writing and producing a slew of these. Cousin Bob Walker, Bob Grady, Joe MacMillan, Chuck Igo...and later, Tom McKay...and MOI all participated in these. The best part about working for WGAN AM560 (during their contemporary music format days) was that we could put together spots and promos that the audience enjoyed listening to. Nobody was screaming at a listener. It was OKAY to be ourselves whenever we promoted WGAN! :)

That lock unit failed on me once when I was working there overnights at their former oldies station 1150 WMEX in the mid-'80s. I could open those double doors even when they were locked just by giving both of them a good simultaneous yank to separate them, though. The doors were only locked into one another, it wasn't very "secure". Maybe they upgraded it by the time you were there.

My car got vandalized twice parked in that area during the two years that I worked there.

Eli - by the time we were there (1994), the main entrance was an oversized Glass thing with a mag-card reader for after-hours entry. those of us in the working class after hours and weekends had to turn left out of the elevators and go past the "little disc jockey's rooms" to the end of the hallway and the big heavy wooden door with the aforemention cypher lock.

no parking for us in '94... arrive an hour early for shift - double-park or circle the block and fight the Grille23 valet's for a spot. Although there was a $5 lot around back near Columbus Ave and, after a few years, the Saturday evening attendant knew to save me a spot. Then I wound up at 1313 Pru Tower and opened up a whole new adventure.

What ever became of Jack Tupper anyway???

When I was doing weekends at WMJX in 1983, the only way for us to access the building was to ring a doorbell which would summon the security guard, who would then let us in. A couple of times when reporting for my 2AM-6AM shift, I had rung the bell and gotten no response from the guard. Had to walk over to the old BPD headquarters to use the payphone (remember when there were no cell phones??!!) ,and call the jock in the studio to let me in.

Jack Tupper comitted sucide in the 80s
I believe it was 1986
He was working at WYNZ at the time
I was working at WJBQ (The third time
when I heard about it!)
SAD!

THANKS FOR SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT, JOE! I had heard something that he had possibly taken his own life, but couldn't find any info on Jack.

Gary
I know you know "BOB ROSE" Mornings at WYNZ back then"THE ROSE ROOM"
I believe he was the one who found
JACK when he did"nt show up for his
airshift at WYNZ
I know BOB got out of radio
he was a good jock!
and a VERY smart man!!
he made THE RIGHT MOVE!!

Joe...

Bob and I communicate at least 3 times a week. He's one of my best friends. I also had the pleasure of serving as "best man" at his wedding to Geri. They make a wonderful couple. :)

For the past several years, Bob has been driving buses and working for the Falmouth, Maine School Department...and believe it or not, he's up for retirement next year! Don't think he's gonna completely hang up his bus keys because he loves his school bus kids A LOT.

Just about everybody I know remembers Bob and "THE ROSE ROOM"--even though he has been away from the radio microphone for several years! I know for a fact that BOB doesn't miss working behind a microphone at a radio station on the weekends! :-*

He should be driving buses as should anybody else involved in that transition of (Rock) Z-101 to (soft A/C) Y-101 back in 1981. One of the stupidest programming moves in Portland radio history....

Here's another of the "stupidest programming moves in Portland radio history"....
When WWGT G-98 went from Coast 98 to Ocean 98 in the middle of a book, because it was a conflict with another station in another market or something like that! Or WTHT Thunder 107.5 Flipping Formats to Oldies and then to County.....If its not broke....DON'T FIX IT!!!

There was a conflict between Coast 98 and Coast 102.5 in Camden....I would guess the eastern edge of 97.9 and the western edge of 102.5 would overlap..I have no idea about back then but now both are fairly powerful stations
