Hey, Joe!

Mainedude2007...

YOU ARE CORRECT. Both FM frequencies are powerful.

However...I think there was some listener confusion between COAST 98 and COAST 102.5. I think that Camden came up with the "handle" first, but I'm not sure?

Anybody reading know which "coast" came first? [Please refrain from using the words: ATLANTIC or PACIFIC]... :p

Yes, Coast 102 had been using that identifier for at least a few years before Coast 98 came on the air in Portland. I believe that the company which owned the Camden station (Ron Frizzell had an interest in it) had service-marked the word "Coast" for the entire state.

When Coast 98 came on the air, they apparently hadn't looked into this. The owners of 102 called them on it, and Coast 98 abruptly changed to Ocean 98.

Wholy Shizzz What a early 80's Portland Radio Reunion going on here??.....Chuck Igo, Joe mcmillen, Gary Agrytunes (I now know who he is), Nick Seneca....Too Bad Jack and cousin weren't alive....we would have the WGAN Line up at one point!
I just want to say growing up listening to you all in the Portland Market! The encouragement the Jack Tupper gave me when I used to raid the Northport plaza studio's on the weekends as a kid! Or my senior Yr in High School working with Cousin Bob @ WPOR!
Those were some good memories....Including a Country cruise on the prince of fundy...3am a few of us drunk, listening to Gary play the Piano and toasting the night away with a $70 bottle of Champagne! Hey it was 1991.....the year not the bottle! Next to working @ WWHT in Syracuse NY I gotta say working at WPOR was the best! Brad Hughes and I teeing off in the hall way! Poking holes in the ceiling tiles with golfballs!
Golf Ball dents in the walls......explaining to Mr. Gold why we were always taking the awards from the front and hanging them out back! Or trying to tech a remote for Deb delaney was worse then that nun in junior high (shivers)!!! Wow I forgot how much fun i had there....Funny part was I was just the a Board op.
This is the only thing I ever wanted to be....it was the only thing I ever wanted to do! I don't regret one minute of it......well there was that time working for WASY AM .....But other than that....its been a fun ride so far!!

Thank you!

Nick! Great to hear from you! Maybe you recall the other Coast station - the old WWNH out of Rochester (KOST). Was that in the mid or late 80's. I recall Bud Stiker being the GM for them for a time.

So is that how Brad got the nickname "Bad News?" And was that the Congress Street studios or the Baxter Blvd locale? I think Brad's golf game has improved a bit (from what I've heard).

And glad you were able to successfully ride out your days at WASY. But I always enjoyed listening to the station back in the day. Big Ange always sounded like he was having too much fun. It might have enjoyed a bit more prosperity if the signal was not so poor.

Apparently "Bud" and his wife liked that format. Whatever became of Bud anyway???

Brad's golf balls shots where at Baxter Blvd. As for WASY, I was there in 92. A Dentist from Bangor bought thats station and WZON AM and WKIT AM & FM and made its Maine News Network or something like that...I sat in a lazy boy recliner watching tv all day. My job was to just take meter readings every 3 hours and watch the field mice get zapped in the transmitter! I was the worst radio gig i ever had! ...To top it all off I never got paid for it!! The Dentist was convicted of fraud! Funny was even though I didn't get paid, they sent me a W2 at the end of the year to claim the money he claimed to take out of my check!! Too make matters worse I was working in the middle of a field in Gorham during HUNTING SEASON!!!! YOU CAN'T GET ANY WORSE THAN THAT!!!!!

Well, they could have asked you to wear the Mobile Marti Transmission Helmet - the one that looks like an antler rack. I understand John Hussey was designing one for you. ;)

Thats NOT FUNNY!!!!!!

Sure it is. Having talked with many funny people over the years, I've picked up a few things that define funny. You - in a field - in hunting season - wearing something that looks like antlers? Yeah - sorry, dude - funny. ;)

It would be funnier if the field were in Buxton, simply because Buxton is a much more fun word to say than Gorham.

But the consensus is: Even though you thought it was the worst gig of your career - we all thought you never sounded better.

(duckin' & grinnin' & exiting, stage left)

So - Any good stories along these lines to share from your experiences in The Sunshine State? We all know there are plenty of Mickey Mouse operations run by really Goofy people down there.

Oh Chuck....that last pun was AWFUL! But unfortunately, TRUE!

But as most broadcasters already know...Mickey Mouse Operations aren't EXCLUSIVE to California and Florida! They're in all 51 states (if you consider Puerto Rico a state)...and I suspect they're filtered throughout the Earth's other continents...even though the words for Mickey Mouse Operation are somewhat....err...foreign? :p

argytunes (who is definitely ready for another WGAN air personality reunion)

Yeah Yeah...your funny Chuck!! Argytunes....haha I guess i'll have to call Tom Hennessey for stories about you! ;D As far as funny stories down here in Heaven's waiting room......Well I had a PD that used to call every NFL Team every week to see if they needed a replacement kicker! Funny part was he couldn't kick a football 20 yds! He is the joke of AM Radio down here.
The latest thing i heard the other day was one morning show host claiming that the cross town morning show host had cheated in the arbitron trends!
Oh and the biggest joke down here is a College DJ named Love Tiger he is 40 yr old virgin. granted he means well but he is just a moron on the air! He used to call a show i produced....it was great radio....as im typing this Cowhead show is doing the best of with love tiger interviewing Dan Blow a disabled comedian from last comic standing.....its a riot!!!

Butters...

We'll make you a former WGAN air personality for a day...how's that?

Speaking of Tom Hennessey...the 2 of us go back to the days of GRAHM JR. COLLEGE! I think our former radio station (WCSB---which at the time stood for Cambridge School of Broadcasting) is now a girls dormitory!
