Hey, Michael Hegarty....

...How 'bout that Liz Vargas? You can say you knew her when...

I don't know how you got along with her, but she seems like an alright person and she certainly is a good broadcaster.

Kudos to a former Channel 3'er, now the co-anchor of World News Tonight...

Liz and I not only worked together at 3, but her first job out of college was replacing me when I left the CBS station in Reno in 1984 for the ABC station in Las Vegas. Less than two years later, we were both working at KTVK. Small world.

Doc:
If you want to keep the synergy, there's another KTVN, Reno/KTVK, Phoenix alum with network experience: Jodi Applegate.

The Reno/Phoenix connection is one of the strangest things I've seen in my career. There's an unbroken chain of people that's pretty long and totally unintentional. The stations are not and were not co-owned and at least three news directors in Phoenix were involved in the hiring, so it wasn't a personal thing.

Here's the chain:

Jan D'Atri was a local Reno/Tahoe girl. Her family owned an Italian restaurant at Lake Tahoe. She got her start in radio (at KOLO, where I also worked) and in 1974 or '75, moved over to television at KTVN. In 1976, she became the market's first female anchor. In 1977, KTVN launched PM Magazine and Jan left the anchor desk to host that show.

Jan's replacement was Shirley Brice.

In 1979, Jan left for KTVK, to host PM Magazine (or was it "Evening" in this market?).

In 1980, KTVN needed a weekend anchor. They hired a guy from Bend, Oregon named Tom Olson. Tom was so good that in a year and a half, they promoted him to 11PM weeknight anchor.

I was Tom's replacement as weekend anchor.

In late 1981, Shirley Brice left for a reporter job at KTVK, hired by a different person than the one that hired Jan.

In 1983, Tom Olson left for KTVK to anchor the 5PM news with Sue Breding.

The news director (who'd been anchoring the 5 and 6PM news) took over anchoring the 11PM, but Tom's departure left a reporter opening, as well. They hired Tony Kovaleski.

In 1984, I left for KTNV, Las Vegas.

My replacement was Elizabeth Vargas, hired straight out of Columbia's J-school, where she'd graduated 2 months before.

In March, 1986, I left Las Vegas for KTVK. Hired by a different news director than the one who hired Olson.

In May, 1986, Elizabeth left for KTVK.

In 1988 or 1989, Tony Kovaleski left for KTVK.

And his replacement....Jodi Applegate.

Unless there's been a Reno hire in the 5 years I've been gone from KTVK, Jodi was the end of the 7-person chain. Of those 7, I'm the only one who has worked with all 6 of the others.

Shirley left KTVK in '88 and is a consultant back east, Tom bailed in '93 and is out of the business, Tony left for KNXV in '95 and went to Dallas a couple of years later, and is now an investigative reporter for the ABC affiliate in Denver, Jodi's co-hosting "Good Day New York" on the FOX station and Elizabeth is hosting 20/20 and anchoring "World News Tonight".
